This is grandstanding. Closing the borders would devastate both economies, cause goods and people to reroute through other countries and in the end at best delay the spread by a few days at severe economic cost which could cause related deaths in itself.

Those who think he only wants to keep out illegals are reading something into the article that simply isn't there. He says, plainly to close the entire border.

Homeland Security Committee Member calls on the public to follow the advice of CDC and WHO

CORNING, N.Y. - Today Member of the House Homeland Security Committee Congressman Eric Massa (D-NY) called for an immediate and complete closure of the Mexican border until the H1N1 Swine Virus is contained and controlled. Rep. Massa also called for the public to pay attention to the medical professionals at the CDC (Center for Disease Control) and the WHO (World Health Organization) and follow their instructions.

“The public needs to be aware of the serious threat of swine flu, and we need to close our borders to Mexico immediately and completely until this is resolved,” said Congressman Eric Massa. “The CDC and the WHO are monitoring this situation closely and I call on all Americans to pay attention and follow their instructions as this situation develops. I have complete faith in our medical professionals and look forward to a swift conclusion to this problem.
