WASHINGTON (AP) Former Vice President Al Gore, a leading voice on climate change, urged lawmakers Friday to overcome partisan differences and pass legislation to curb greenhouse gases. [snip]
Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, the committee's ranking Republican, argued that the proposed "cap-and-trade" system to cut greenhouse gases would cost tens of billions of dollars a year. "How in the world can we have a (pollution) trade system that doesn't cost jobs and doesn't cost the economy?" he said.
"I think the cost of energy will come down when we make this transition to renewable energy," countered Gore. He predicted "massive job losses if ... we continue business as usual, ignoring warnings and just sit and wait until oil prices go sky high again."
And he said if climate change is not addressed, costs could be much greater.
But House Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio called Gore's testimony deserving of "another Oscar" alluding to the recognition received by the Gore film on climate change. Boehner said the Democratic bill amounts to a "massive national energy tax on every American ....who drives a car, buys a product manufactured in the United States, or has the audacity to flip on a light switch."
And some Democrats also expressed concerns about the economic impact.
Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., said he's not convinced the draft legislation will protect U.S. jobs because other countries like China will not face the same economic burdens.
"If the United States leads, China will follow," Gore said.

Gore is an idiot.
Gore has his own little “industry” that sells carbon credits. The scam will make him a very wealthy man.
Gore is either delusional, or he is delusional. I don't see any other possibilities.
I thought global warming was caused by overweight people. Wouldn’t that mean that Gore is his own culprit? Oh, never mind....
Monckton claimed House Democrats have refused to allow him to appear alongside former Vice President Al Gore at the high profile global warming hearing .
Democrats rescinded his scheduled joint appearance .
The House Democrats don’t want Gore humiliated, so they slammed the door of the Capitol in my face ... They are cowards.
Former Vice-President had chickened out and there would be no joint appearance.
Why won’t he just go away? He’s doing his past more harm than good.
Gore will get wealthy
And then Gore will go to prison, like all scam artists!
Gore already sunk a bunch of money into the carbon credit ‘business’.
If he isn’t successful getting these ‘regulations’ that will force everyone to purchase ‘carbon credits’, he will lose his investment.
ME want be wealthy.
Maybe me start up counterfeit carbon credit printing.
Anyone got picture of 'carbon credit'?
How do you “Title” such a credit?
Does it have a “VIN NUMBER” like a vehicle?
Does it have a “lot number” like a parcel of real estate?
How do we make sure that the same “tree” or “green” project or industry does not generate DUPLICATE credits, for the SAME activity?
If a forest of trees burns down, does that automatically turn the “credit” into a “debit”???
Cap and trade is not workable.
It will be the biggest financial scam in history!
IOW - “Stop the arguments and give me the money!”
“Just DOOO it! Don’t question it!”
Why? So Gore can get bigger and fatter.
Can we get this in writing?!?!
“”I think the cost of energy will come down when we make this transition to renewable energy,” countered Gore.”
That is all proof one needs that Gore is a liar.
Congress acts all the time in regard to the climate and the environment. They just don’t necessarily act in ways that Gore and his cohorts want them to act.
Let’s not bicker and argue over who killed who.
“If the United States leads, China will follow,” Gore said.
Really, and who do you think is going to make them Al? You?
