Pa. GOP Holds Out on Specter
Roll Call ^ | Apr 20, 2009 | By Shira Toeplitz

National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) may have called for Pennsylvania Republicans to unite behind Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.) last week, but GOP members of the Keystone State delegation are choosing to sit on the sidelines in what is expected to be a blockbuster primary in 2010.

The state’s Republican House Members indicated in separate interviews that they are not ready to endorse Specter, who faces a challenge next year from former Rep. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) in what is likely to be the toughest battle of his 30-year Senate career.

Specter enjoyed the support of almost everyone in the delegation in 2004, when he narrowly defeated Toomey by less than 2 percent in the GOP primary. But with Specter trailing Toomey in polling on next year’s rematch, Pennsylvania Members aren’t inclined to choose sides for now.

Cornyn is wrong on this one.

Given his position, he can’t very well go against an incumbent in the primary contest, but he sure as hell doesn’t have to come out FOR him. He should have just kept his mouth shut.

That might not be the case with a half-decent incumbent challenged by some kind of idiot, but that’s certainly not the case here. Specter abandoned the party on what may have been the most important vote in our lifetime. And Toomey has just as good a chance of getting elected at this point in the general as Specter does.

Should read, "...FINAL battle of his 30-year senate career."

I meant, as I said LATER in that post, “would you like it if the Senatorial Committee took sides in an OPEN primary, where no incumbent was running?”

Sorry, in going back, it does look like I left out the word “open” in one sentence, while I did use the correct word in another.

Anyway, Incumbents form their OWN committees. Specter is an incumbent, he gets the support of the incumbents little “club” -— let it go.

This is not the RNC, this is NOT the PA GOP.

This committee is doing its job.

It is OUR job to give the committee a better candidate to support, next time.

the dem smear team and acorn will probably get behind spector,we can only hope him and the rest of the pathetic vermin on both sides gets out in the next few years, but unlike the republicans ,the dems are planning on keeping what they got and will do whatever it takes to accomplish their goals, even if its electing republicans.

Maybe his BFF, BO, will bail Specter out with campaign funds since Arlen helped him pass his Porkulus Bill. One of Pres. Bush’s worst mistakes was helping this sorry excuse for a Republican win re-election.

However, it is the job of the Republican Senatorial Committee to support Republican candidates who are running against Democrats, and to support Republican incumbents.

This is a PRIMARY, not the general election. The NRSC should stay out of this. If the NRSC is supporting Specter, then so is the GOP as the NRSC is it's Senatorial arm.

You are wrong on that point.
There is NO connection, legally, between the RNC and the Senatorial Committee.

Any group can use the name “Republican” -— there is no legal connection.

Cornyn’s an idiot. And I can say that because I voted for the idiot and he’s my idiot.

Amen.

Why not just take the GOP back from the RINOs?

The same was said of John McCain’s presidential bid after he came out in support of amnesty. Looked how that turned out. RINOs must have more lives than cats.

We already have term limits. They’re called elections.

Why not just take the GOP back from the RINOs?

I've been trying that for years. I'm tired of voting for the lesser of two evils, or not having a good choice at all. How many republicans in high places are listening right now? They are still RINOs.

A million people showed up for the Tea Parties. How many republicans actually backed us? Very few of them had the guts to go that far. They'd rather be comfortable in the middle, and blame everyone else for what they do or don't do.
