Actually the French have a fairly good martial record up until The Great War, the Battle of Verdun (1916) in particular.

The French Army mutinied in 1917, and they seem never to have recovered.

Another thing about France - my gut feel - not necessarily backed by facts but more by feel.

The French can be quite cruel to their enemies. I personally would not want to be on the bad side of some pissed off French special forces, or legionnaires or whatever. I just get the sense that they wouldn’t bother too much with the
social graces. What happened in 1789 is perhaps a manifestation of that - an Napoleon was no Emily Post either.

The Somali Pirates offered resistance, but the French taunted them a SECOND TIME! and they retreated from the withering cuts.

Chain the pirates to the anchor and toss it overboard. Sell the ship at auction and use the proceeds to combat more piracy.

It's a sad day when the French are more militarily forceful than the US

Hey! Lighten up a little. Obummer is going to send the pirates a $800B stimulus package!

“My only problem with this action is that “detaining” the pirates doesn’t do much to deter them.”

I agree. Taking these scum to an American or Western European Courtroom to try them for their crimes, and then giving them a few years in a comfy prison, isn’t going to deter other pirates at all.

I have no problem with an initial seizure of the boat and pirate crew. Sift through the boat for all evidence of links to other pirate ships or organizations. “Extract” (a word used only by dentists and intelligence officers) whatever information you can from the prisoners. Then kill them and stick their heads on a pike at the nearest Somali port.

Now, THAT’S deterrence.

The French forces had been responding to a distress call from a Liberian cargo ship that was being attacked by pirates using rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire. A French military helicopter reached the scene, then reportedly followed the two small pirate skiffs back to a 30-foot boat apparently being used as a base for the pirates.

The BS about them not hurting anyone is shown to be the lie it is by this sentence. When you fire RPGs and small arms at a ship you stand an excellent chance of hurting someone. The leftards are so full of it with there, "just let them have the ship and pay ransom" surrender mode it makes a person want to puke.

Good for the French. Sarkozy may be slightly to the left but he is further to the right than our Coward In Chief.

If we were doing the same and if the Canadians would give their military a decent ROE pirating would become an obsolete occupation in short order.

I’m sure the average French prison is much more comfy than whatever sh1t-hole these people come from in Somalia.

Which is why the French handed them over to the Kenyans for trial. A Kenyan prison is not likely to be nice.

Hey, give credit where it is do. What the he** is Bozo doing about the pirates? Nothing. He wouldn’t have rescued the captain if the Bainbridge hadn’t taken the initiative. The French have aquitted themselves well in two incidents with the Pirates over the last several weeks. The US has one embarrassing save that wouldn’t have happened if left up to our Coward In Chief. Sarkozy is many times a better leader than Bozo, and better than France has had in decades if not centuries!

“Officials are now debating responses to the problem, including possible land incursions into Somali ports from which the pirates operate.”

Force the pirates to listen to an Obama townhall.

My first mental image was the cargo ship that was captain’ed by Dennis Hopper from the movie WaterWorld.

30’ foot? Guess not.

For shame to us, the cheese eating surrender monkeys are doing what we dare not do.

Sarkosky has called ZerØ a wimp. Or was it weak? Doesn't matter - same difference

IF a better man were in the oval orifice, your comment would leave a mark.

The French ship towed the mother ship toward port in Mombasa, Kenya...

It's hard to recall the last time that the French military did anything worthwhile, so this can be considered a "stop the presses" story - from that perspective.

BTW, Mombasa, Kenya is believed to be the town of Obama's birth. Mere concidence?

Thanks Civ, for the re-cap.

Sarko and the Pirates.... the Saga continues.

And he doesn’t run around the world cozying up to dictators and tyrants as Obama has this week.
