Boxers are the most trustworthy and stable dogs imaginable. The military attempted to use them in their K-9 units, but were unable to get them to attack on command. They are great defensive dogs and will protect their owners with their lives, they just won't attack on command.

They will however, like most dogs, attack other dogs if provoked and because of their strength and tenacity (and given that they have one of the highest bite strength ratings of all dogs) they can be very damaging to other breeds. They were originally bred to hunt bears.

Best dog there is for families with small kids.

Not all of them; My brother in law’s boxer is a spoiled brat who likes to stomp on my kids.
I don’t hold it against him though, since BIL doesn’t really know how to raise such an active dog.

Boxers are great (mastiff background) dogs! They do have a propensity for flatulence after meals--as your family probably can attest--and drool a lot. Their fighting style (both in subduing fleeing criminals or tilts against other pooches) also means a lot of paws involved with the business ends of the muzzle too.
