National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn has thrown his weight behind Sen. Arlen Specter, who is likely to face a tough renomination fight against former Club for Growth President Pat Toomey:
"My job as head of the NRSC is to guide the GOP back to a majority in the Senate," wrote Cornyn to Pennsylvania Republicans. "I can't do that without Arlen Specter. With him as our nominee, I can target our campaign resources toward beating Democrats and growing the Senate Republican Conference."

Now, I am all for regaining control of the GOP, but I frankly don't see it happening.
The Leadership is deaf to the grassroots and then come election, they warn us about the Democrats.
The GOP had ten years of leadership in the nation and spent just like Democrats.
No balanced budgets, no attempts to deregulate or dismantle the massive gov't we now have.
The GOP just want to manage the gov't, not actually do anything to decrease it.

Just about the time THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of Americans of all political persuasions got together in Tea Parties to express their ANGER and OUTRAGE over the mindless expenditure of their tax dollars on “Stimulus Plans” and “bailouts”, the cretins who run the national GOP announce they are supporting a maverick Senator, Arlen Spector, for re-election, who BROKE with Republican Ranks to vote, along with the twin sisters of idiocy, Collins and Snowe, for the Imposter's gigantic Stimulus Bill.
Boehner and McConnell, two men who sat at the helm while the GOP control of Congress and the White House crumbled around them and the senescent ears of the GOP Nominee in 2008, were still left in power by national party representatives.
The problems with the GOP are monstrous and, as you say, have NOTHING to do with the grassroots Republicans or basic Republican political philosophy.
The damage done to the GOP recently by these morons in Congress and the RNC is exceeded only by the stupidity of the LAST GOP incumbent who INITIATED the bail-outs. The Bushes as a Klan, have a LONG history of talking like conservatives but acting like limousine liberals.
Despite all this, the party machinery exists. None exists for an alternative party. Regretfully, our best shot at present is to attempt to regain control of the GOP, drive out the Mitch McConnells, Boehners, Spectors, Crists, Snowes, Collinses, Grahams, Bushes, etc. and to USE grassroots anger at “business as usual” with these people and our tax dollars.
It CAN be done. The Rockefeller wing of the Republican Party was flushed out of power by Ronald Reagan. Only the First Bush's position as Vice-President - a MOST unfortunate choice - allowed them to slither their way back into power.
We CAN kill the RINO snake and take back the party. It might be easier than forming a new one - UNLESS something coalesces from these Tea Parties.
Stay tuned and in the meantime - register, vote for conservatives in the GOP, and work for conservative candidates in the GOP. If better opportunities arise, I'm SURE FreeRepublic will have the news first.
Amen. I just had a call from the Republican National Committee and them to stop calling me because any party that supported “that bum Spector” wasn’t getting a dime of my money.
Didn’t we see this exact same story back about 2004? I’m sure it was posted here.
What exactly are you contenting that Specter is purportedly good for?
Well, ****this**** PA voter who voted Specter last time around is voting ****Toomey****. The bosses can go ‘eff themselves.
For now, denying the rats some of their policies. Other than that, he is a waste. The same goes for the other rinos. We need the numbers right now and in the short-term, until we recapture the House and Senate.
Here's the problem with that theory: in the end, when it counts, he "compromises" and the 'rats get what they want. Furthermore, by compromising the policy becomes "bipartisan" and the GOP gets equal blame for the 'Bam debacle to come.
Not one red cent.
I rather take the chance, then having him go full blown. It’s a crap strategic position, but we have to deal with the hand we have been given.
Two words: Lincoln Chaffee.
Also, with all due respect, a comment like the above implies that we have to accept incumbents and shouldn't exercise our god-given right to vote someone out of office, either at the general or primary election.
Not at all. I want the rinos and moderates out, but that isn’t going to happen until 2010. For now, we have to work with what we got, which I will agree sucks big time.
Just saw that Sen. John Cornyn (R - TX) is going to support Arlen Spector over Pat Toomey for Senator from PA - I sent the following to Cornyn:
“Senator, I just went to your site, completed the form and was forced to pick a category as a condition precedent for submitting my comments. I picked Crime because you have no category for Principle. Sen., you must be out of your f*kng mind to support Arlen Spector. That kind of crap is why the f*kng GOP has lost - you have become seekers of power, privilege and the status quo. This is not Principle, it is a Crime. The GOP will not get a dime or a vote from me. Indeed, I am meeting a lot of incensed people like me and you will lose for the next generation unless you prove immediately that you are different from the Democrats. They, the Dems, do not want to waste a crisis or surrender their petty personal ambitions to the apparently silly principles established by our Founding Fathers. It is sadly clear that you and your co-democrats (a/k/a RINOs) also only want power, not priciple and not adherence to the Constitution.
Long ago, I used to be a Democrat, moved for shcools to NYC (think Bella Abzurg era) and then Boston (remember Tip O’Neill and the sadly, still-living murderer Kennedy). I changed my affiliation to Republican. Recently, I switched to Independent (actually, to get rid of Dollar Bill Jefferson), but fools like you (and eunuchs like Spector) make it an easy decision, and offer me no reason, to change back. That said, I tell you lthat the f*kng Republicans will be sitting on the back row until you die. Get a spine, some balls and, most importantly, some principles. You might as well clone and elect f*kng Collins or Snowe, who also are spineless and have no balls. You clowns think you can be Dems lite and we, who are repulsed by the Dems/Socialists, will be driven to you by default. Think again, cap.”
But if we let the National GOP hold on to people like Spector right now the RINOs won't be out in 2010 either.
I agree completely with all your points. However, we must deal with the situation strategically. In terms of the national GOP supporting rinos and moderates, the answer is simple, don’t give money to the national GOP, give it to specific candidates and/or conservative PAC’s. However, my point is that we must not give the rats an easy win.
Well said!
