This was virtually a “time on target” firing squad. As soon as the pirates showed 3 heads at one time, they were DEAD.
I’m sure the CO of the ship was fully briefed. “As soon as we see 3 heads, we’d like to shoot.”

Well, that was thanks to the “set-up” that they did — to get everything all ready-to-go for the take-down...
They first reduced the numbers of the pirates around the hostage by convincing one of them to be on board the Naval vessel to be the “negotiator”. The Navy fooled them into believing they were going to negotiate...
That left the remaining “stupid ones” on the lifeboat.
The Navy also convinced them that the Navy could be “good guys” and help the pirates out by “towing” their lifeboat (doncha know... LOL...). So, the Navy put them on a short tow line, making it so they were real close (for the shot, doncha know... LOL...).
And then when everyone was “in sight” — they went “bang”... and that was that... :-)
Had Obambi not allowed local command decisions to control, the Captain would be dead, the United States would have been embarrassed and all terrorists and terrorist-states emboldened. So Obambi narrowly staves off humiliation this time. As for the future, we’ll just have to see — I’m not optimistic.
