Citizens Held as Illegal Immigrants
ABC ^

Posted on 04/12/2009 1:39:55 PM PDT by Chet 99

Pedro Guzman has been an American citizen all his life. Yet in 2007, the 31-year-old Los Angeles native — in jail for a misdemeanor, mentally ill and never able to read or write — signed a waiver agreeing to leave the country without a hearing and was deported to Mexico as an illegal immigrant.

For almost three months, Guzman slept in the streets, bathed in filthy rivers and ate out of trash cans while his mother scoured the city of Tijuana, its hospitals and morgues, clutching his photo in her hand. He was finally found trying to cross the border at Calexico, 100 miles away.

These days, back home in California, "He just changes from one second to another. His brain jumps back to when he was missing," said his brother, Michael Guzman. "We just talk to him and reassure him that everything is fine and nobody is going to hurt him."

In a drive to crack down on illegal immigrants, the United States has locked up or thrown out dozens, probably many more, of its own citizens over the past eight years. A monthslong AP investigation has documented 55 such cases, on the basis of interviews, lawsuits and documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act. These citizens are detained for anything from a day to five years. Immigration lawyers say there are actually hundreds of such cases.

Yes. And that’s all. Not an indictment of our immigration policy, not a flashing neon proof of racism ... just an error, the kind large bureaucracies make all the time. My former employer put another employee’s husband and kids (but not mine) on my health insurance coverage once. And I wasn’t mentally ill or illiterate, and they knew all our Social Security numbers and everything.

That wasn’t addressed to you, but rather to the tone of the article.

Too bad the guy’s family didn’t take better care of him, but you can’t legally stop a mentally-ill adult from doing all kinds of things.

ABC is all wound up about 55 cases over the last 8 years, but chooses to ignore the cost associated with 20 million illegals, the millions of crimes and thousands of deaths these illegals inflicted upon the US.

I guess that's balanced if you hate America.

I run into Mexicans all the time that have been here for 5, 10, 20 years and more...Many these people don’t speak English. One can only assume they’re either stupid, lazy, or they just don’t give a damn.

The correct word is entitled.

Sharpton and Nancy and co. say they’re entitled not only to every handout and service they can think of, but to be served in their native language as well.

So why should they bother to learn English, teach their kids English, or punish them when they start acting like thugs by 14, litter the parking lot with Corona Lite bottles at 15, have multiple arrests by 16, and are still living at home and knocking up 14 year olds at age 26?

That’s just “culture”, and it’s beyond criticism you racist.

Amusing anecdote. Blurs the issues and directs the mind of your average ABC viewer-droid toward the proper conclusion...

which is that the border situation is hopelessly confused so lets abolish the border.

the bad guys are doing a good job of sowing confusion on this thread as well.

Bush, during the past eight years, made citizenship all but pointless. So yeah, I'd say we've got millions of criminals here that are totally entitled, supported and pandered to by our own government. All the while, us stupid tax payers are forced at the point of a gun to support and subsidize this coast to coast lawlessness.

There are ways to undermine all this, that I won't mention. One must get really creative.

Granted it is, but he is an AMERICAN CITIZEN we don’t deport AMERICAN CITIZENS regardless..

True enough. But the point of the article/hit piece is that our attempts to deport illegal immigrants are wrong because we get American citizens caught up in the net. My point is that the incidents are so few and far between that they have to find a mentally ill criminal to use as an example. Part of the argument that the illegal immigrants' lobby uses is that Mexican immigrants make good citizens, but what they are trying to hide is the fact that many of the so-called citizens are indistinguishable from illegal immigrants in that they are no closer to American culture than those who just arrived.

Tying this incident, if we can even believe that it is true, to a fear of regular Americans getting deported at will is ridiculous, and I'm sure ABC knows it, but for the gullible (which is basically all of the Obama electorate), stories like this have propaganda value.

The softening of the sheep (public) for Obama’s massive Amnesty push that will not only bankrupt border states, but the nation...all in favor of votes in the 2012 election.

12 million new Democratic voters, that is the plan.

Yes there were 55 mistakes in a sea of 20,000,000 illegal Mexicans who are here now. That is a good percentage.

ABC wants to run the oddball story and ignore things like this...

“State seeks more federal aid for cost of keeping illegal immigrant inmates”

A federal program pays less than 12% of the cost for noncitizen criminals. As California renews its bid for funding, some lawmakers are optimistic.

By Richard Simon

April 11, 2009

Reporting from Washington — Fifteen years after Congress promised that Washington would help states pick up the tab for imprisoning illegal immigrants convicted of crimes, California is receiving but a fraction — less than 12 cents on the dollar — of its nearly $1-billion annual cost.

Exactly. Too many people are too angry over the illegal immigration issue that they can’t even think straight. This story is a travesty of justice. Getting angry over it and rejoicing that he was found and brought back is what any American ought to do.

Too many borderline racists on FR, and I say that as somebody who is a big believer in the rule of law (including immigration laws).

There’s nothing wrong with exposing this. In fact, our government’s misdeeds ought to be exposed as much as possible and as loudly as possible. And there’s nothing wrong with viewing it as an outrage.

Just because somebody tries to tie a bureaucratic bungle into the concept of enforcing immigration law, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t care about this issue.

I don't see it as an issue. My point was that MSM hacks like ABC are trying to make it seem like an issue, but the only people affected, if any of these stories are even real, are people who probably shouldn't have been citizens anyway and were only mistaken for foreign nationals because, effectively, they are foreign nationals. The day they start dragging away people who are screaming the whole time "Hey, I was born in East LA!" then I'll start to worry. Otherwise, this is pointless anti-ICE propaganda.

Too many people are too angry over the illegal immigration issue that they can’t even think straight.

Most here have no problem with thinking straight.

The real problem here is that the mainstream media literally cherry picks articles whenever possible, in an effort to aid and abet, and otherwise seek sympathy for those that have broken our laws and defecated on our sovereignty.

Most Americans are justifiably angry and outraged over this government sponsored violent invasion of our country, all supported by not only our government, but the mainstream media.

Those still capable of critical thought understand that most of the articles put out by the mainstream media are propaganda in an effort to gain sympathy for the millions that are breaking our laws.

"Too many borderline racists on FR"

Racism has little to do with it. This government sponsored invasion of millions is costing American taxpayers billions of dollars every year. Most Americans are inordinately aware of this.

This invasion is not only cost Americans billions every year, it is also choked off our classrooms, jails, schools, and our social services, hospitals and virtually everything else. Since Americans are forced endure and pay for this lawlessness, it's very understandable why so many would be so angry, even making those comments when the subject of the article is a legitimate citizen.

Thousands of American citizens are victims of rape, robbery, theft, and murder every year at the hands of illegal aliens.

So the next time you see angry comments added to another article attacking the United States for deportation of a dozen or so legitimate citizens, it should be understandable as to why the level or degree of anger is being exhibited by Americans.

The fact is with tens of millions breaking our laws and an entering the United States illegally, you can bet a couple of legitimate people are going to be caught up in this epic invasion of America.

You implying that some here may be racist is really a joke, given the fact that tens of thousands of American citizen victims of this open borders lawlessness, litter the landscape.

I completely understand the anger and outrage.

“Problem is...it isn’t about illegal aliens. It’s about deporting our own citizens.”

You think with tens of millions entering this country illegally bringing with them massive fraud and crime, that a few legitimate people are not going to get caught up in this coast-to-coast lawlessness?

Here’s a hint for you, this is just another cherry picked article produced by the mainstream media, that are trying to convince the easily led that out of all this chaos and lawlessness, a few legitimate people being deported is somehow a big issue.

It’s not.

“Shouldn’t have been citizens anyway,” what does that mean?

The granting of citizenship to the children of people who were not in the country as citizens or legal residents is only a fairly recent interpretation of the 14th Amendment. Prior to that, the parents would have had to establish legal permanent residency in order to confer automatic citizenship on their children based purely on being born on US soil.

This link will explain it better than I would:
