I was the guest on C-SPAN’s “In Depth” program on Sunday, April 5. Afterward, the volume of my e-mail messages rose substantially as people wrote to me to express their opinion of my performance or to ask me questions. Although many of these messages sent approbation, for which I am grateful, others, like most of the people who called in during the program, were less than complimentary.
I had a foreboding that one of these messages might contain, shall we say, a bit of denunciation when I saw that its subject line read “You’re a fucking STUPID and VAPID.” In the body of the message, the sentence continues:
little insect.
“Everything deregulated…”
Please shoot yourself now and by chance, you haven’t bred have you?
Scum sucking maggot, get the fuck off my CSPAN channel and get out of my society.
Although this foul-mouthed lingo is not the kind of language that my mother taught me to use, I understood it well enough to file it under the rubric of “strong disapproval.”
Over the past decade or so, my popular articles on the Web have frequently elicited similar expressions of personal contempt and hatred. Had I not been a student of ideology, I might have been somewhat perplexed by such malevolent missives. After all, what do my writings endorse? As a rule, they uphold peace, voluntary cooperation, tolerance, and friendship toward all who do not proclaim themselves to be my sworn enemies. How can such inoffensive views touch a reader’s nerves so painfully that he responds by assaulting my character and demanding that I evacuate the country in which my ancestors and I were born? During the painful years of the Bush regime, we had to endure the slings and arrows of the brown shirts who compose the so-called Republican base. Now that Obama has ascended the throne, the brown shirts of the left are emerging as the more conspicuous barbarians.
I read this on another thread or someone’s tag line.
To offend a conservative, tell him/her a lie.

Higgs is the complete opposite of a leftist. He is one of the leading free market economists in the United States. Just because he doesn't like the pro-bailout GOP (do you?) doesn't make him a "lefty."

He’s a consistent opponent of big government where it is by rightwing nanner staters or leftwing nanny staters. Some of us oppose big government intrusion even by Republicans! How about you?
He referred to the Republican base as “brownshirts.” He’s no friend of the conservative movement.
The Republican “base” deserves to be criticized in the strongest possible terms. Why do you want to let them off the hook? This “base” facilated the fastest growth of big government since LBJ. They not only put George “Prescription Drugs” Bush in power but refused to challenge the big governmnet GOP congress. They also allowed Bush to shred the bill of rights of American citizens in the name of National Security.
Look, I voted for Alan Keyes in the primary in 2000, but honestly, who would you have rather seen nominated then? McCain? Lamar Alexander? Orrin Hatch? Liz Dole? I mean, come on.
I didn't see a SCOTUS ruling reversing the Patriot Act. I feel just fine about it.
It is not just the Patriot Act. The Bush record included electronic snooping of the international phone calls of American citizens. The most famous example was when folks at the NSA who cracked jokes while comparing notes about the sex lives of American military personnel. Will you also think this is "nice" when President Obama does it to you?
I didn’t vote for Bush in the general election either time....so don’t blame me for the rise of big government under his watch.
