“Rick, a good man, made a pact with the devil and the devil won because Rick lost his soul for a while.”
I disagree. Santorum was showing loyalty to his Party and to his Senior Senator. That’s a far cry from a “pact with the devil.”
Santorum, Bush, and Cheney should have stayed out of the PA primary. Why not wait for the primary to be over before they supported Specter. Thanks to them, we've been stuck with Specter here.
I'd rather have somebody that shows loyalty to conservative principles than to the Republican party.
Santorum lost becsuse of demographics...PA is been going solidly Dems for quite a while. I can’t think of a GOP candidate who could win...I don’t think Toomey will. People don’t want to hear this...but a moderate GOP candidate might win. I also do not believe Spector can win because of card check. He had a coalition, but card check is a big issue in PA and Spector lost some of the bipartisan support that helped get him elected because of this issue.
You don't show loyalty to your party by supporting people who don't support the principals of the party. I watched Santorum in interviews during this election, and he was saying "It's all about the numbers".
Using your logic, the RNC and Republican Senatorial Committee which supported Lincoln Chafee against a marginally more conservative in the primary in Rhode Island was justified. The result: Chafee won the primary and lost the general, and then changed his political affiliation. The result part two: Libby Dole (who ran the Republican Senatorial Committee slush fund and supported Chafee) lost her following election in North Carolina.
The purpose of primary elections is to elect people who support the party platform....not to rubber stamp the incumbent just because we need the numbers. You should never put party over principal.
I suspect some arm twisting went on in that election. Snarlen Arlen made some promises to GW, who I suspect made promises/hints/threats to Santorum. In the end Arlen stabbed GW in the back and helped get Santorum defeated in one fell swoop. I forget who was the first turncoat on the Stimulus.
That insane Magic Bullet, earned Arlen some real political capital.
