Nothing about shotgun pellets in the bad-guys; how do you miss with a shotgun?

Easier than you would think
A shotgun is not a guarantee of a hit at close range the pattern is only a few inches wide
In dark moving targets excitement all stacks up against shooter

A shotgun gives you far greater one shot stopping power than a handgun and less penetration than a rifle but pattern spread is no substitute for good marksmanship. A nine pellet double aught pattern spreads about four inches at seven yards. People who intend to use shotguns for self defense need to practice as much as people who have rifles or handguns.
