Fox's Van Susteren Vulnerable to Beck's Success, Palin Ties
Around the Net in Media ^ | Tuesday, March 31, 2009 9:31

Greta Van Susteren, a Fox News prime-time host, is being scrutinized for a questionably close relationship to Sarah Palin.

It seems that Van Susteren's husband, John Coates, is a political adviser to the Alaska governor.

Questions about the Palin link, combined with the overnight success of Glenn Beck at Fox News, makes observers wonder if Beck might soon get Van Susteren's spot.

Insiders say Beck has already been viewed as a possible replacement for Van Susteren, who represents the weakest link in Fox's otherwise indomitable lineup.

Van Susteren's ratings are getting smashed by Beck, whose show, despite airing in the ghetto that is 5 p.m., is already the network's third-highest-rated program.

So far, Fox says the switch won't happen, in part, because the network has always had a woman in its prime-time lineup and Fox News chief Roger Ailes is reluctant to change that

Exactly - the Palin part is just the media’s way to discredit her, again. If Palin was the issue, then Glenn Beck would have to go, too, as he actively said he supports her for 2012. Bill O’Reilly just announced he’d promote her legal defense fund on his show and donate $1000.00 to it. If Greta is facing problems due to Palin, then so would Beck and O’Reilly.

More hogwash to embarrass the Governor.

Greta is steady and reliable. Beck is unstable and volatile. He will burn out fast. Ailes is aware of this.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Demo politicians and MSM reporters have been intertwined for eons.

It’s a big clique.

so I ask. What’s the big deal with Greta?

Oh, it’s Republican. Silly me.

O'Reilly's a pompous, blowhard, cheap trinket hawker, but he is a ratings phenomena.

FoxNews is as likely to experiment with moving his timeslot around as the Colts are likely to give Manning a shot at linebacker.

“Beck is unstable and volatile. He will burn out fast.”

Wanna bet? He’ll be there as long as he wants to be. He has a very loyal following from radio.

...Van Susteren's husband (attorney John P. Coale)... All they had to do was check his campaign contributions to see that he's donated tens of thousands of dollars to the DNC... how hard is that to find out?

Facts? Research? Hmmmph. Democrats don't do that sort of thing. It's like "talking white."

If a Democrat feeeeeeeeels something is true, hey! It's gospel!

I’m sorry, I missed the MSM outrage with George Steponallofus so if they didn’t care about his being briefed by the White House with talking points then they sure as hell can’t be genuinely outraged with Gretta.

Beck is not the dogged interogator that Greta is

you obviously didn't see him destroy the CT Attorney General over his political grandstanding. The AG said he was going after the AIG bonuses, and Beck nailed him on not having any legal authority to do so, and that he was only doing it to boost his run for Governor. I've never seen Greta do anything that direct.

“Vulnerable?” To what? Public opinion? Big friggin’ deal. She may work a subject to death, but has a good show, is an outstanding interviewer, and is undeniable fair in her reporting.

This ain’t football. If Ailes can double his numbers overall, O’Deadly will move where Ailes tells him to go.

One thing you’re forgetting. O’Deadly failed at radio.

Beck has succeeded enormously at both.

Who’s the REAL ratings phenomena here?

Then there's that sharp blond attorney-ette (getting a mental block on her name) who should get a Sunday night commentary show and bump Geraldo's useless hour into a black hole somewhere.

Megyn Kelly.

Greta seems to be actually practicing some journalism but CNN got a Peabody award for their '08 election coverage. It was very Hopey Changey ...

Greta is about to be replaced by Beck in primetime and the spin is going to be it's because of Palin.

Beck is an open supporter of Palin, so that argument won't wash.

I'm not forgetting anything. If we were talking about a radio station, O'Reilly's radio numbers would be relevant. But we're not, we're talking about the FoxNews Channel.

You don't move your number one guy from the number one time slot unless you're an idiot. Ailes is not an idiot.

Beck's an up and comer with great growth potential, but unless O'Reilly's numbers drop dramatically, he's not moving from 8 o'clock. He really isn't.

If O'Reilly gets moved to ten o'clock despite maintaining his monster numbers at eight, I'll be proven wrong. But that is not going to happen. No way. No how.

O'Reilly's not sweating. Hannity's probably not either. Greta's worried. Shemp is very worried.

There ya go. Have Beck move in to the 7;00 spot

I have Beck whenever I want him, DVR's are soo easy to use, time slots should not matter.

Greta has been more on message than Hannity lately. He has too many guests that run him over, and make him look as though he has lost control of his show.
