I hear tell that lukewarm coffee is essentially cold by the time one gets to the job site. At the time of this case, the reaction was to sell coffee that would not be acceptably hot 10 miles down the road. I know because I was around in that time frame.
I'll bet that a heck of a lot more than 700 people complained about cold coffee after McDonald's (and others) overreacted to this famous frivolous case.
A number of folks here weren't buying coffee back when this case occurred. To those of us that bought our daily cup of McDonald's coffee, it was a farce. We always expected coffee to be hot, and until this took place, it was. We had enough sense to handle it properly - this lady didn't, and the result of her actions was to punish the millions that did NOT burn theirselves on hot coffee. There was a period of time right after this case when it was difficult to find a hot cup of coffee.

Yep, the only winners here were lawyers and the litigious set.
We solved the problem by bringing a microwave to our job sites.
I think I’ll sue Westinghouse, my upper lip got blistered one time.

They should only sell cold coffee with a little packet of DAVE’S INSANITY SAUCE! That will really warm them up! Twice!
