Ask him if he read the rest of the article, or if he can provide you with the context article from a 60 year old magazine.
You might also want to ask him if he really studied the article for himself, or if he is just making you think he did by not providing the source he got the soundbite out of.

When I was LDS and researching its history and doctrines, I was cautioned not to “think myself out of the Church”, which is exactly what happened.
The LDS church CANNOT withstand close scrutiny.
