Arlen Specter's decision to not support card-check was the shot heard round the labor world on Tuesday.
Card-check was the union movement's Holy Grail coming off their investment of people and money in the 2008 election a mechanism that makes it easier to join a union through cards and arbitration, card-check was the selling point for many union households that were skeptical of candidate Barack Obama.
The reaction from pundits on Specter's surprise announcement was a mixed-bag of whether or not his decision will save his chances of winning his primary contest next spring. The day after the announcement a string of conflicting polls showed Specter either down or down more against former 2004 rival Club for Growth president Pat Toomey.
But beyond how this helps him, the larger picture is that in a sense, Specter has helped a lot more people than potentially just him.

The paper misses Specter’s real position.
Salena, I appreciate your work.
Sadly, if it takes someone with as little spine and as much inanity as Specter to “lead” people, then these people are even worse off than he is.
Our country is filled with idiots.
Cool.
With this Specter POs Democrats almost as much as he has PO’d Pubbies. Maybe we can ‘ol “Scottish Law” Specter replaced.
Hopefully the replacement won’t be a Democrat...
Yep. Just about half politically thinking anyway.
I don’t see this as Spectre voting no. I see it as him just saying “My Price just went up again. It might come down if I am re-elected, but for now, I’d be out of a job, so I need to really feather my nest.”
Arlen, please die and save us all the waiting!!!
WSJ reported this week that Specter’s position was based on his view of the country’s financial situation, not being in favor of secret ballot. He said he’d vote for card check under other circumstances.
Fine, now fire him.
Specter’s position will change the moment he wins the Republican primary, so don’t let him win the primary.
Specter needs to lose. His is not the leadership we need, and his voters need to make that point.
“Specters position will change the moment he wins the Republican primary, so dont let him win the primary.”
You are exactly right on that note. He really does believe that we are that freakin stupid.
OTH, the last time he ran against Toomey, it was the union thugs who switched parties that put him over the top.
I’m thinking he’s thinking he beat Toomey again without their support.
Bad Risk there Arlen old buddy!
Weren’t the unions promising to get their members to cross-register as Republicans and carry Spectre thru Pennsy’s closed primary, if he’d just do this one thing for ‘em?
No doubt Specter has already had secret meetings with the unions telling them to back off on this so that he wins the primary after which he will change his mind.
And the unions will go along with it, because they don’t want to run against Toomey.
Pennsylvania politics is dirty, real dirty. The Republican establishment is a bunch of RINOs and will do whatever is necessary to stay in control. Specter is vital to them, and they and Specter will deal with the devil if necessary.
“Our country is filled with idiots.”

Depends on what the meaning of filled is. Yes, there are idiots aplenty in every county but there is room left to squeeze in at least a couple million more idiots.
