1976 was my first election as well. I recall not being too disappointed that Jimmy Carter was elected because I voted for Thomas Jefferson Anderson. So did 3,697 other people in my state.

I was in college, and in our infinite wisdom, we debated the candidates ENDLESSLY at the cafeteria supper table. My friend decided I had a point, and voted for Jimmy Carter. I decided he had a point, but couldn’t bring myself to vote for Ford. I stepped into the booth and pulled the lever for someone I’d never heard of. Only later, as we were all watching the returns together, did I discover Lester Maddox was WAY over the edge. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lester_Maddox)
