Obama: U.S. must have "exit strategy" in Afghanistan
Reuters ^ | 3/23/09 | Chris W

President Barack Obama insisted on Sunday that military force alone would not end the war in Afghanistan and suggested a U.S. "exit strategy" could be part of a new comprehensive policy he is expected to unveil soon...

"What we can't do is think that just a military approach in Afghanistan is going to be able to solve our problems," Obama said. "So what we're looking for is a comprehensive strategy. And there's got to be an exit strategy ... There's got to be a sense that this is not perpetual drift..."

Given the terrain and the provence in Paki under control of the Taliban, how will we end the incursions back into Afghan. How are you going to stabilize that part of Afghan with our current military strategy? We haven’t done it so far.

I don’t see a problem with isolating the areas in taliban control and keeping them out, but we need to define the area and get it done. This is smelling a little like some of our other actions in which we didn’t do what needs to be done.

That sounds more like a candidate statement than a presidential statement. Who’s running the country while this fool dithers?

This is from the guy who just sent 15,000 troops over there and he’s already talking about an exit strategy? He also talked about an exit strategy before we won in Iraq. When he says that military force alone won’t assure victory what does he mean? Should we send social workers and “community organizers” to Afghanistan? Obama is clearly sending a message to our wartime enemies: “We don’t really mean it. Just give us an excuse to wave the white flag of surrender.”

TO ALL:

In his 1996 ‘Declaration of War Against the Americans,’ Osama bin Laden cited the U.S. retreat from Somalia in 1993:

“You have been disgraced by Allah and you withdrew. The extent of your impotence and weaknesses has become very clear. When people see a strong horse and a weak horse, by nature they will like the strong horse.”

I don’t think leaving Afghanistan with our tail between our legs would send the ‘right’ message to our radical enemies.

Two years from now, people will wish Bush were still President. Mark my word.

You must be referring to the emotionally insane.

The rest of us knew before the results were in, but of course there was a Constitution in the way. But, we knew who and what Mr Obama was and is and apparently will always be.

“He also talked about an exit strategy before we won in Iraq.”

Good point!

Perhaps — to Obama — Success is Failure and Victory is Defeat!

What is the word for exiting a war without first winning it?  Losing.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Obama declared the war in Afghanistan was lost and that the military should do a better of job of reaching out the Taliban. This after approving the deployment of 17,000 additional troops to the area.

His position is that if the US isn't winning the war, then a reconciliation process should take place.  This entails that the American military would reach out to moderate elements of the Taliban.  That's what he said in his interview to The New York Times aboard Air Force One recently.  I didn't know there were moderate terrorists out there - does this mean that they kill fewer people than extreme terrorists?

This naive world view can be conveyed with the adage“if you can't beat them, join them.” It is indeed preposterous, especially coming from the most powerful man in the world.

Obama's new slogan for wars should be: "The war is lost, so let's exit as fast as we can."

I’m more interested in an exit strategy that involves 0bama exiting the White House in 2012.

The main problem with stabilizing is that the Afghans believe we’ll leave in a few years, and the Taliban won’t. Then the Taliban will take revenge.

It may be that victory would take a bigger commitment than America is willing to make, in which case we should get out.

the proper “exit strategy” for any real American military action is to exit when the mission is complete - that should always be the American way!

Otherwise the Afghanistan operation will always be equated to the Vietnam defeat, which too, was a capitulation by Congress.

First he lectures Bush that he's fighting the wrong war and needs to be in Afghanistan and enter Pakistan to catch Bin Laden.
Here he fights his chosen war and guess what, he's talking, or better preparing us of his bail out.

Um, I don’t mean to rain on anyone’s parade but wouldn’t it be ODumbo’s job to come up with the strategy and not simply run around telling everyone that we need one?

This guy has the brains of a community agitator and it’s not quite enough at his new paygrade.

I don't care so much about Afghanistan. WHAT WE NEED: an exit strategy from the move toward communism in our own country. Why attack evil elsewhere and let evil blossom here?.

Actually, I’d like to see him go head-to-head with a rock. I’ll even give them both teleprompters.
