If this is true it was just sheer bad luck:

If he had an AK, SKS etc, and he just started shooting rapid fire, he must have missed their hard plates a few times. Maybe he got of ten shots, and 3 or 4 made contact off the plates. That’s my guess. We’ll see. Thanks for the info.
Just read your post. It was essentially an ambush at the apartment, and the bullets found their marks blindly. What horrible luck.
