I’ve had a number of unannounced visits/interactions with folks doing the same volunteer work for the US gov’t in WY, MT, ND, SD, NE and IA. Without a doubt the majority of my interactions in IA (especially eastern IA) were relatively negative. The same situations in the other states father west and north were almost always extremely positive.

Oh yeah. I grew up in W Central Iowa, and have ended up along the Mississippi... they are two different places. The combination of union goonery, ethno-politics (various hyphenated Americans, all followed by the word Democrat) and a glut of college/university safety-pin Communists in places like Dubuque, Iowa City and the Quad Cities have negated any charm they could hold for me.
