Charleton Heston served in the US Army Air Corps, enlisting in 1944 (but "only" serving as a B-25 radioman/gunner in Alaska).
He picketed segregated restaraunts wherever his stage career took him.
He marched with MLK in the early-mid 1960s ("long before Hollywood found it fashionable."). He was later called "nazi" by some in Hollyweird.
He spend the final years standing up for our Constitution.
I'd say "Hero" works for him.
