Put pride aside, Rendell urges (food stamps are economic stimulus, not welfare)
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | 3/12/09 | Mike Wereschagin

To those hurt by the recession but too proud to seek government help, Gov. Ed Rendell says: If not for yourself, do it for your country.

He urged people to view food stamps not as welfare, but as economic stimulus.

"Think of it this way: If you avail yourself of these sources of government relief, you'll have money to spend in the economy, and that's exactly what we need to reboot the economy," Rendell said Wednesday at Brashear High School in Beechview. His 45-minute address was televised live to gatherings in six other cities.

Property owners should take advantage of tax credits for such things as weatherizing homes, which could put people to work immediately, he said.

Some economists, however, questioned whether programs such as food stamps should be pitched as economic stimulus.

"What people really would like to do is work and find jobs that pay them well," said Robert Strauss, professor of economics and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University. "What the governor should be doing is encouraging companies not to lay off people and to (attract) businesses to Pennsylvania."

It would appear that the governor of Penn is kinda retarded. Now I submit that there are two kinds of retarded.

The first kind of “retarded” means that there are those persons within the government that are not fit to be in charge, that would be Charly Rangle, of course there is an oppertunity for persons that pay state taxes, now personally I think the guy nothing more than a sophistcated scumbag that Plies for votes based upon what he could give constituents. and thats how idiots get eternally elected. the second most retarded thing about Charlie Rangall is how this dolt votes within whatever, and It’s not for me to say a whole lot except if you pay taxes, your gettin robbed, Now hey, the people that are robbing us have gotten quite good at it, they get elected cycly after cycle, I’d like to to a most aloof thing, I’d like to ask the voter of ‘change’ and ‘hope’ if this not but more of the same.

we need to get about 35 million conservatives to sign up for food stamps, thats what $85-$100 a month per person? How long would it take to bankrupt the nation?

Other economists say Rendell is right. Every $1 spent in the food stamp program creates a $1.73 increase in gross domestic product,

Of course the cost to taxpayers is not even given a thought.

Food Stamps are most certainly Welfare. You go to the Welfare Office to get them.
Food stamps are welfare but not for the recipient.

No matter where you go to get them, food stamps is a farm subsidy issued by the Dept. of Agriculture. It's printed right on the script.

LOL According to this brilliant economist, if the entire population went on food stamps our GDP would be astronomical!

In theory, it sounds good, but you would be hard pressed to find that many conservatives who are willing to sign up...

it's been posted numerous times before, but it's been already been thought of, just not by conservatives.

They carried Fast Eddies broadcast in my community at a local high school of course. Those invited, local gov’t hacks, social services agencies, housing and economic development agencies. Fast Eddie also wants to expand certain programs by legalizing video poker in bars and taverns across the state and collecting the states piece of the action.

I suspected as much but posted it again just for the halibut. I also suspect that rather than go on welfare, conservations will go Galt.

“...we need to get about 35 million conservatives to sign up for food stamps, thats what $85-$100 a month per person?”

I could be wrong but the info at http://www.dpw.state.pa.us/ServicesPrograms/FoodStamps/ indicates that you need to have a very low income to get on the bandwagon, or chuckwagon.

A single person, max gross monthly income $1127, benefits $176.

Two people, $1517, benefits $323.

There may be a work requirement as well. There is a link to the application, it’s pretty long and involved. It’s definitely welfare and there are penalties for entering false information.

i doubt there is a work requirement for food stamps. single women who don’t work make up the bulk as far as I know. homeless men even qualify here in Texas to get $85 to $100 a month in food stamps...

I looked that up, cuz I was curious one day

http://www.dpw.state.pa.us/oimpolicymanuals/manuals/bop/fs/535/535-01.htm#P31_312

According to this page there is indeed a work requirement for food stamps. It mentions exempt categories, such as youth, age, disabled.

Perhaps they are single women with babies. Even then, I believe they have to work or actively seek employment, and avail themselves of day care facilities. (Anything to break up a family!)

If I'm wrong, I welcome correction.
