LAKE WATEREE, South Carolina (CNN) -- At a time when the U.S. Postal Service says it is experiencing a financial crisis, it purchased a $1.2 million home from an employee so he could relocate, a CNN investigation has found.
Postal Service spokesman Greg Frey said the home will be resold, as others have been.
"It's not like we threw away a million dollars," Frey told CNN. "We are hoping it's going to go for the appraised value."
But a real estate agent in the area said the home could be a tough sell in a depressed housing market -- and the USPS said it lost an average of more than $58,000 on the 500-plus homes its relocation program bought and sold in 2008.
The 8,400-square-foot, six-bedroom home on Lake Wateree, about 30 miles north of Columbia, is likely to be the last million-dollar home purchased by the Postal Service. A $1 million cap on homes eligible for the relocation program took effect in February, Frey said.

That’s a lot of stamps.
I’m glad our postal employees can afford million dollar homes! lol
The Post Office has been captive to the Democrat Party since about 1900. They take care of their own.
The post office should be shut down. There is no hope for it. It is rotting from the inside.
I have had so many things stolen in the mail. I have had things delivered 6 months late. Never from FedEx, always from USPS.
I was in a post office once as it was closing. They had locked the door two minutes early and someone tried to get in to mail a letter. The employees all stood there laughing and talking back and forth how sometimes people bang on the door for 5 minutes. They thought it was really funny. Mean stupid people.
A POSTAL EMPLOYEE can afford a milion dollar home? Must pay very well...
You’d practically have to kill someone to get fired from the USPO.
If a community organizer can afford a 3.5 million dollar home why should a postal worker be any different?
Since way before that.

“you’d practically have to kill someone...” Does “going postal” ring a bell?
Someone’s awake this morning...
What? 500?
WHAT?
In the real World, by which I mean the non-government World, someone would be fired. The Federal government is the only institution that doesn’t have to make a profit - or even make sense.
They obviously pay their employees too much.
I think you have to kill someone in upper management to get fired from the post office
At one time I was a contract mail carrier. That means I delievered the US MAIL but was not an employee. I delievered the mail for about 1/3 of the cost of an USPS employee. My point being, I’m familar with the USPS and their policies.
There are problems with the USPS, but not being able fire a USPS employee is not one of them. All any USPS employee has to do to get fired is any of the following.
1) Any rural carrier is fired for first DWI offense. No, I don’t mean while delievering the mail, I mean any offense.
2) Get caught with a firearm, even unloaded and locked in the trunk of your car, on USPS property.
3) Insist on smoking repeatedly in the Post Office.
4) Repeated insubordination (USPS managers do not tolerate their orders not being followed.)
5) Repeated sexual harassment.
6) Repeated racial remarks.
So, you never heard of any USPS employee being fired for any of these? That’s because they are serious about it and the employees know it. With the exception of the DWI and gun offenses, you will be warned and a letter put in your file before you are fired. That’s the extent of the difficulty in firing a USPS employee.
Remember, all the shootings at Post Offices? What do you think those were about? Everyone of which I’m aware was about someone being fired!

The better question is how can a postal employee AFFORD a 1.2 MILLION dollar mortgage?
I’m just wondering what the hell kind of postman has a salary where he can afford a million-dollar house!
