Looks like Sen. Robert Byrd is smoking the competition when it comes to bringing home the bacon.
Of the nearly $7.7 billion in earmarks included in the $410 billion omnibus spending bill proposed for next year, no senator was more aggressive than the Democrat from West Virginia.
Byrd scored a whopping 60 earmarks for his state at a cost of nearly $123 million, according to Taxpayers for Common Sense, a watchdog group who tallied the earmarks.
The Top 20 list features 12 Democrats and eight Republicans.
Byrd was nearly eclipsed by Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), the ranking member of the Finance Committee and the Senate's highest-profile critic of the recent bank bailouts, snagged the No. 2 spot with $115 million.
Other senators were also very generous when it came to getting money for local projects, including Kit Bond (R-Mo.), who was No. 3 and got 54 earmarks at a cost of nearly $86 million, while Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) was right beneath him with 46 earmarks at a cost of $77 million.
The pork didn't stop there.

Would the good people of WV PLEASE retire that old coot.
Byrd has been the king of pork since mo-ham-head discovered a strong dislike of pigs.
More proof, that they're (almost) all the same.
I'm from WV and expect that from Byrd but that is what caught my eye more than anything.
And I guess he voted against it.
Knowing it was going to pass.
I'm willing to fork out what little bit of cash I can afford to start a national Rush infomercial movement.
Republicans are politicians too.
We are being sold out.
At least now we know why Shelby was on his knees apologising to the messaih.
We’ve been trying. I think most of the voters here have voting for Byrd ingrained in them from birth. What is sad about the money is that most of it will go to road building or re-paving work. Not many permanent jobs will be created.
Disgraceful, despicable a##wipes, does anyone have any dignity, morals, allegance, reponsibility, patriotic call to duty? “I’m against this bill”!!!!! ....shhhh, how much am I gettin? When will we ever see the likes of a Ronald Reagan again?
It’s nothing more than “hush” money-they’re trying to buy Byrd and Rockefeller’s support for the coming shut down of the coal industry-hey mountaineers-choke on that.
Good grief, we’ve been trying, but it’s gonna take dying. The old byrd has the world record for chittlin slinging.
