I hope the NFL doesn’t make players wear the numbers of any of these reckless fools, or schedule any dramatic memorials. Getting shot like Sean Taylor is one thing. That was tragic. Being stupid with a boat is quite another.

LOL! I know what you mean! I grew up just off the shores of Lake Erie...It can be terrifying...Now living in AZ, I'm talking 20 knot winds in the large reservoir lakes here, and yes no fish is worth it. besides who the hell can enjoy fishing when your fighting even 6ft swells in a 21ft. boat?

I grew up with Lake Erie in our backyard. We had a 8ft (guessing) rowboat that my dad used for fishing. We had an apple tree at the edge of the cliff leading down to the water and it was probably a 20ft drop easy, maybe 30ft. We used to chain the rowboat to the apple tree, and we still lost several rowboats to the waves when storms rolled in.

It is a small boat and a single engine at that. It may not sink but if it turns over you are screwed.

If they had all stayed together and the waters calmed would they have been able to flip it upright again?

I would also worry about sharks...

I would think that sharks don't want to get whipped around either and that they would have to deeper water.

My husband was saying that the four of them could weigh close to a thousand pounds.

I would think they each probably weighed 250, that would be 1000 and I would think that would be a minimum and wouldn't take into account any gear that they took along, food, water, etc.

60° – 70° (A) 2 – 7 hours (B)2 – 40 hours

Think I read somewhere that the water temp was 64.

Yeah...you would think that would be the case but I fished for sharks in similar conditions in very rough seas and barfing:) and they were all over the place.

No way I am going out 35 miles on a 21 foot open fisherman with one engine. You are just asking for trouble. 35 miles out with the possibility of 9 to 11 foot waves? Suicide run.

I talked to a friend who used to have a nice open fisherman probably a 27’ with two Honda outboards. Very nice boat.

He said his radio had an emergency pinger that you could press in case you were in trouble and had to tend to the emergency. He said you just had to hit the button.

I don’t know. See picks below. It was a single engine outboard but I doubt 4 strong guys in the water could have flipped it back over.

VHF with DSC

Yeah, but those 9 to 11 footers wasn't going to be til Sunday. This was Saturday morning. SE winds off of Clearwater headed west. They probably didn't even have 3 footers for the first 15 or so miles.

Wow! same for me pretty much...I remember as a kid when the trees lost their leaves, it seemed like the lake was right there...I grew up in a town called Newport...How bout you?
We had a creek running through our property that fed the lake and we would head out as kids every spring depending on the severity of the rains and follow it out to the lake..I had learned to respect the waters from that upbringing. I cannot tell you how many countless times we got inner tubes from the local farmer in the spring from their leftover tractor tires and use them in the lake...Use to float out and watch the oil rgs coming in from Canada I suppose.

Yeah...But if your heading 30 mi or so or evern 15 miles off shore, wouldn’t you check the weather?

Yup. I think it is on the higher end radios and sends out a GPS fix to the coasties.

I have been out on the east coast in warm gulfstream waters on a twing engine 30 ft or so sport fish. I was creeped out at 5 miles with radios, etc. No way I would go out 35 miles with their boat and no pinger or survival raft. Just asking for trouble.

“And why didn’t they head back to shore earlier? The heavier those seas got, the longer it was going to take that small boat to get back —especially if they were traveling against the wind.”

You are knowledgeable and I respect the sentiment. Wish others wouldn’t make such idle speculation on what has probably led to others deaths.

All we know is the weather reports during and after. Some energy asking for God’s mercy on those lost is in order. And their families.

Sheffield Lake. Just googled the address. Stunned at the change. Our address was 5551 East Lake Rd, Sheffield Lake, OH.

Wow. I’m not sure our house is even there anymore. Could the cliff have eroded that much? (Been 40 years) I can’t believe the amount of houses they have crammed into that area now.

About 20 miles west of Cleveland. I think Bay village is in that area, Avon Lake, too.
