When it all started:
The US Catholic Bishops DID NOT vigorously defend Pope Paul VI’s stance against artificial birth control. As a result, priests “in the trenches” were not disciplined, or supported. A great many things began to be tolerated in the name of a “Pastoral” approach.
EVERYTHING afterward within the American Catholic Church has stemmed from this fact.
