MOSCOW - Russia will respond to any attempts to militarize the Arctic, the head of the country's armed forces was quoted as saying on Monday during a visit to Abu Dhabi.

"Overall, we are looking at how far the region will be militarized. Depending on that, we'll then decide what to do," Interfax news agency quoted General Nikolai Makarov, the head of the General Staff, as saying.

He seems to be poking us right back with involvement in South America and the Caribbean.

Sounds to me, from the threat, that Russia has already militarized the Arctic.

What's he talking about? The Canadian effort to put a base in the far north?

Last I heard there was some proposal to station an icebreaker at Barrow, but I'm not aware of much we're doing.

No, I’m talking about the slumbering bear in the woods during hybernation - those things are awfully cranky when people mistakenly wake them!

The U.S. and the Soviets / Russians have long sent nuclear subs into the arctic on various missions - that’s been going on for well over 40 years now, so it’s not exactly “news”

You're right. The Ruskies are probably just pushing Obama around. He probably thinks the Arctic region is insignificant.

Ice Station Zebra, correct?

Loved the book, thought the movie was a bit stilted and incoherent.

Yes, that’s what I think. Gad zooks. I feel like I’m living back in the 60s again. Soviet Union is rising again from the ashes. Cold war era Russian Bear bombers are prowling the skis and Putin is saber rattling. In America, the leftist children are in charge—again.

Deja vu all over again. Sheesh.

I wonder when we’ll hear the old mantra “better red than dead”. I think its about time for that to pop up again.

Yep, its about time to start that again. However, if we manage another red scare, can I play McCarthy’s role. the libs will be longing for McCarthy before I’m through. (/s)

Never read the book, but it’s not unusual for movies to fall short, especially with complex characters.
