Hershey Closing Peppermint Patties Plant in Pa. (moving to Mexico)
Business Week ^ | 2/20/09 | AP

A flag is flying at half-staff outside The Hershey Co. plant in Reading where production of York Peppermint Patties is ending.

After 23 years in Reading, the chocolate maker is closing the plant Friday and moving production to a new factory it has built in Monterey, Mexico.

It will mean the loss of 300 jobs in the southeastern Pennsylvania city. The plant also makes 5th Avenue and Zagnut candy bars and Jolly Rancher hard candies.

They closed a large plant in Oakdale CA that had around 300 employees and moved that to Mexico. Don’t buy their stuff.

Good question.

What some fail to understand is that immigration (legal and illegal) is the enemy of offshoring. Offshoring is the enemy of immigration. The anti-immigrant sentiment has just hastened offshoring.

In my IT field, I’ve always worked beside immigrants (their papers are “in progress” whatever that means). Including now, there have never been enough citizens to fill the IT jobs. If these immigrants weren’t working beside me, all the jobs, including mine, would be in India (or non-existant).

But in candy there is another culprit: Protectionism. PA not-withstanding, Chicago used to be the candy capital of the world. But most of that has already left the country.

Sugar is one of the most protected commodities in the USA. A combine of Democrats and Republicans from LA and UT have controlled its import. That protectionism of sugar has lost many more jobs in the USA than it has saved.

Protectionism on steel lost more jobs than it saved as appliance manufacturers and others factories that used steel found it to be the last straw in pushing them outside the USA.

The simple fact is that open borders, free trade is good for our economy if it encourages work and trade. Of course open borders that gives welfare to immigrants is not good for our economy. But, then giving welfare to anyone, immigrant or citizen is not good for our economy. So the key culprit there is the welfare factor, not the immigrant factor.

I think Pennsylvania should raise taxes on the Hershey corporation and really stick it to them with really high workers comp rates (to fund lawyers), township taxes for employees that commute , higher utility rates in order to fund "greener energy" for Pennsylvania, increased state income taxes and higher unemployment insurance policies.

That'll teach them to leave the state in order to make a profit. f'ing corporations!!!

Mexico will lose the Hershey corporation once they can secure funding and get a tour of China.

Buddy of mine builds fountains and pumping stations was doing a project in China, was button-holed by some state official and asked where his pumps were made. Was offered a 50 acre site with power, water, road access and rail access with on site housing and "security force". Cheap labor and minimal "fees" were also included.

He declined cause he loves living in Georgia/Florida but he says it's tempting.

Anybody that thinks if you cr#p on a company for making money will make them stay is crazy. A corporation isn't a "person", it's a legal entity for making money from production. That's it.

If I was governor of Texas and had a willing legislature I would make Texas the fastest growing area of the world.

I'd lower state corporate taxes to 0%. Make lawsuits in state court a "loser pays" legal fees and make all union balloting secret. I'd put a freeze on all property taxes and repeal the "Robin Hood" plan as legalized theft. Welfare recipients of any type would be required to show up for maintenance of schools or roadways from 0900-1700 5 days per week.

I'd then tell the press, to give the little experiment 4 years since we've had over 40 years of the welfare state and corporate warfare.

My bet is that you'd hear a giant sucking sound of jobs flowing into Texas and liberal nirvanas like Michigan, Pennsylvania, Cali, NY, MA, Illinois, among others would implode.

Oh yeah, and anybody arriving into the state is ineligible for welfare or state aid for 4 years.

Thank you for that link. There is always more to the story that doesn’t get reported after the sensationalism of the first report is moved aside by new stories.

One has to be extra cautious when buying anything from Walmart - bring your magnifying glass.

I read your link.

So 2 out of 3 peanut production companies in this small town (if I read correctly) are using locally grown peanuts and have high standards, and the market is open for them.

But the one company that is being accused has a chemist on record stating their peanuts are imported from an organic farm in China...plus their working conditions/cleanliness are not up to standard either?

Did I state that correctly?

“The simple fact is that open borders, free trade...”

“Open borders”....is a much different issue than “free trade”...and that’s just to start with..

Correction...it was a 'lab worker' who testified to Congress that the tainted peanuts might have come from organic peanuts they import from China.

Lately, I am deligent in checking labels on EVERYTHING....

..and will not buy any foodstuff specifically from China or Mexico.

Borders should be controlled and only immigrants that add value to our country and are willing to assimilate into this country and take it as their own should be allowed. Seasonal jobs should be handled on an as needed basis. i.e. When the apples are picked the worker returns home no need to bring the entire family for the few weeks of work. Medical care should be limited to true emergencies where patient is stabilized and return to country of origin. No welfare for non-citizens.If caught in country illegally permanently barred from future entry. Employers caught hiring undocumented workers face harsh fines for first offense mandatory jail time for subsequent offenses. This is not rocket science. Mexicans are being invited into this country so Democrats can get illegal votes.
