Short trip, long agenda: Obama visits Canada President, P.M. discuss slumping economy, trade, war in Afghanistan

David Boily

More than 1000 supporters of President Barack Obama stood outside the Parliament Building as the U.S. leader met with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Ottawa.

President Barack Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper hold a joint news conference from Ottawa, Canada.

OTTAWA - President Barack Obama huddled with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Thursday on the slumping economy, trade, energy and the war in Afghanistan as the new U.S. leader traveled outside his country's borders for the first time as president.

Obama touched down late morning in Ottawa, heading into a day of meetings. He came bearing a pro-trade message to assuage Canadian concerns over protectionism; a promise of a new strategy in Afghanistan as Canada moves to pull out all its troops there; and talk of clean-energy cooperation as controversy hangs over Canada's massive oil-rich tar sands.

He just took about 45 minutes to say nothing

There was only 10 seconds of information. It took 45 minutes because he's in a metric country, silly.

The last 5 presidents visited Canada as their first official contact with foreign nations. Every one of them took their wives on the visit to Canada. Did Michelle go?

Did Bambi use his Canadian Passport to gain entry? Please send him home early. We can thank him for our strong dollar next year...maybe next month.

Harper knows what he is talking about. Obama has no idea what he is talking about, he just keeps talking. I love how when Obama is done stumbling around, Harper says, “Let me answer your questions.” lol

Steve’s too classy. He was raised with sense and manners.

And we’ve seen his birth certificate.

Did he win the primary there too?

My company has a big stake in helping development of the oil sands — if Mr. “Green” Jeans has his way, thousands of REAL jobs and great energy potential goes by the boards...

I don't think so, and I think that, and the short visit, are kind of rude.

She was notably absent from the 9/11 memorial during the campaign as well. I guess we just don’t rate as a country.
