Not surprising. I have always considered the alarmism of the John Birchers as not necessarily wrong but misdirected. I suspected a more hidden conspiracy. I commented to my husband that his rabid John Birch friend seemed to me like someone pointing at a dorsal fin heading toward him and warning that the fin might hurt if it hit someone, all the while not seeing those jaws under the surface.
