WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senator John McCain said on Friday that President Barack Obama should include Republicans in his plans sooner if he really wants their support after the bitter debate over the $787 billion economic stimulus bill.
McCain, who lost the 2008 presidential election to Obama, and other Republicans complained they had been left out of negotiations on the legislation by Democrats who hold majorities in both houses of Congress.
McCain said the bill was filled with non-emergency spending paid for with borrowed money that future generations will have to pay back.
"I think that the majority of people understand that this was generational theft," McCain told Reuters.
The Arizona senator said many other issues coming up will require a bipartisan effort that he said has been lacking so far from Obama and the Democrats.
"I hope they've learned a lesson," he said. "I hope that they will reverse course, and sit down, negotiate from the beginning, so you're in on the takeoff, so you can be in on the landing."
McCain met Obama two weeks after the November 4 election and agreed that "Americans of all parties want and need their leaders to come together and change the bad habits of Washington" to solve urgent challenges.
Obama initially hoped for an overwhelming majority for passage of the stimulus bill, but the debate quickly dissolved into the traditional argument in which Democrats backed a package more weighted to spending programs and Republicans advocated tax cuts. Continued...

McCain had a conversation with Kerry about being his running mate, there’s no denying that. McCain claims he never considered it. Based on how this man has pretended to be a Reagan conservative and voted like a liberal, I don’t take him at his word.

McCain is obviously unaware of how Democrats play the game, which explains his humiliating defeat to some guy with no executive experience or management skills who likes to hang out at the gym on Sundays.
If this dope actually believes this he's even dumber than I thought.
Generational theft? Zero wouldn’t be in office now if it weren’t for the younger voters mesmerized by him. And they are the ones who will be saddled with this huge debt for most of their working lives. Such irony.
Based on how disliked McCain is by so many conservatives, it's really best for him and the country that he lost to Obama. Now you all are free to say what you really think about McCain and don't have to hold back and play nice. Obama and the Democratic Congress give conservatives a focus for their outrage and impetus to get back to our core principles. Now is our opportunity to come storming back the way we did in 1994.
If only there had been as much vitriol thrown in Dubya's direction by the rest of the Republicans in Congress and the party in general. While busy trying to save Terri Schiavo's life and focusing on social wedge issues, the GOP let Bush run up a $5 trillion bill on our grandchildren's tab.
McCain challenged Dubya early on and said tax cuts must be matched by spending cuts. McCain was one of only 9 GOP Senators who voted against Bush's massive prescription drug entitlement. I won't miss Dubya, DeLay or any of the other fiscally conservative in name only RINOs.
Count me in with P.J. O'Rourke. It's spending, stupid. More government spending is less freedom for you and I. By that measure, our government has taken a lot of freedom during the last eight years and under Obama will take even more.
But it's time to move on. Dubya and McCain are old news and the deficits are spilled milk at this point.
I'm putting all my chips on Bobby Jindal. The whiz kid from my home state better give a damn fine response to Obama's speech on Feb. 24. He is Obama's kryptonite and this party sorely needs a Reaganesque figure who can make that persuasive argument.
The "Time for Choosing" argument is always persuasive in the hands of a gifted speaker with a razor sharp mind who can hook the people and suck them in.
Bobby is also a Catholic... Catholics are 25% of the population and a critical voting bloc if the GOP is to win national elections. Michael Steele is also a proud Catholic and unlike Rudy is in good standing with the church.
This is a good trend. Perhaps Bobby and Mr. Steele can convince other Catholics (as I try to do) that being a good Catholic means charity begins at home, not voting for a charitable welfare state to relieve you of your guilt for failing to be a good Catholic. Obama and the Matthew 25 crowd that support him are so misguided and deluded by their socialist Kool-Aid it's hard to begin to have a rational debate with them.
I think McCain did Bobby a favor when he passed over Jindal in favor of Palin. Saved him for being associated with the defeat. Hurricane Gustav kept us from seeing Bobby give a "Time for Choosing" type speech at the convention but hopefully Bobby knocks it out of the park later this month.

Name me someone other than Bobby Jindal Rush has said was "the next Ronald Reagan" in the last 2 years. Now, the question is... will Rush still feel that way after Jindal's response to Obama on Feb. 24?
Palin is an intellectual lightweight. Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric did nothing more than expose her as someone who doesn't believe or know enough about what she's talking about to give anything more than canned soundbite responses. She blamed it on McCain's campaign but you know damn well that it just exposed her as someone who can't think on her feet when confronted by the liberal media.
Conservatism requires thinking and lots of it. Liberalism is all about feeling. The reason Reagan was so persuasive is because he had thought it all through and could preach conservatism like no one else.
I want someone who doesn't fold like a cheap suit when Couric and Gibson interview them. So far, my money is on Jindal. It sure as hell isn't on Palin. Huckabee is very media savvy but I'm still a little suspicious of his populist tendencies.
We need a true conservative who is also one hell of a salesperson and can preach it to all of America and not just to the conservative choir. That's what Reagan did and that's why the so called Reagan Democrats flocked to him.
