Political analyst G. Terry Madonna said Specter's rejection of his party's leadership isn't surprising.
"He's a moderate Republican who wins with crossover votes," said Madonna, director of the Center for Politics and Public Affairs at Franklin & Marshall College. "He's not an ideological conservative."
Madonna said Specter risked alienating people in his party on the eve of his re-election bid.
"There are Republicans that will be really upset with him over the stimulus package," Madonna said.
He noted that Specter's re-election might hinge on the success or failure of the stimulus.
Specter said he wasn't married to his party's interests.
"I make my own judgment based upon what I think is in the national interest," Specter said.
When asked about Specter stepping outside party lines, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell gave him a pass.
"Sen. Specter is a member in good standing," he said. "And I'm confident he will be re-elected with our support."

There, I fixed it.
"Sen. Specter is a member in good standing," [minority leader Mitch McConnell] said. "And I'm confident he will be re-elected with our support."
Senator McConnell's unwavering confidence and promise of support makes me feel better. I was concerned that the Republicans might lose the seat.
He’s been bribed with something. Anyone know what it is in that PORK bill that he benefits from?
Follow the money.
“Mr. Steele needs to make a public statement assuring all three traitors that they can no longer expect to be considered Republicans or receive any form of support from the party unless they rescind support.”
I agree and this will tell us a lot about Steele.
We kicked out the Tn. House Speaker for just the same antics.
Take note Mr. Steel!
Nor conservative ones. I want a divorce.
There are fools, damn fools and then there is Spector stupid.
Strip him of all the party committee assignments he doesn’t want, and give them to up and coming new mebers. I bet that would put some STFU in that pipe.
I emailed Specter yesterday. The a$$hole (well, his staff) emailed me back to say that since I am not a Pennsylvania resident, they would not forward my email on to Specter. It seems that he has an abundance of email messages these days.
To contact Specter’s offices:
Philadelphia (215) 597-7200
Pittsburgh (412) 644-3400
Harrisburg (717) 782-3951
Scranton (570) 346-2006
Allentown (610) 434-1444
Erie (814) 453-3010
Wilkes Barre (570) 826 6265
Before being at risk of losing the seat, Republicans have first to win it.
There is ONE typo in that headline. A certain “B” should actually be an “F”.
What is the point of winning a seat if once held it votes against you.
Heads- your win
Tails- I loose
Sucks!
Touche!
Not the first time either. Spector was a McCain long before McCain made it fashionable to be a Maverick.
“Specter said he wasn’t married to his party’s interests”
We’ve noticed, Senator.
Per Wikipedia:Dementia (from Latin de- "apart, away" + mens (genitive mentis) "mind") is the progressive decline in cognitive function due to damage or disease in the body beyond what might be expected from normal aging.
I am still upset at Bush for supporting Specter over a conservative candidate who almost defeated Specter.
