What does my sign-up date have to do with anything? Free Republic has certain rules that members agree to follow when they sign up. Members should keep their word and obey such rules especially when said rules are there to protect the board and owner from legal troubles. Is that so hard to understand?

While I share your concern for the reputation of the site, it's suspect when coming from a newbie.
That said, there's nothing illegal about raising the number of exemptions on your W-4 form as long as you don't end up not being to cover the check for taxes owed on your return.
So, nobody is putting FR in danger here, IMO.
