It means he performed (what passed for) comedy in 17 states and therefore owes taxes to the states in which he worked.
The only laugh Franken ever got was when he said he was running for the Senate. If he's ever seated, God help the Republic.

If hundreds of us and maybe thousands of us turned into IRS and Tax Cheats, the friends of Obama when their tax evasions became public, we might have an impact on them and future criminal tax evaders.

I'm still not convinced that Leona Helmsley wasn't a Dimocrat.
She fit the bill to a tee!
What the hell has happened to the common sense in our country in real time??

Franken then admitted that he owed more than $50,000 in back taxes to 17 states. Oops!

Frankenstein's CPA is familiar with doing taxes for entertainers who have gigs in a number of states. Big Al is pinning this on the accountant and it remains to be seen if the numbers man will take the blame in return for keeping Franken's business when he takes a seat in the Senate.
I believe Franken didn't tell the CPA to keep his mouth shut. I'll bet the CPA's attorney told him to keep his mouth shut.
IMO, the accountant will flip at some time and implicate the porn "comedian".
But nothing will happen to the cheat. The Senate ethics committee is dominated by other Dem cheats, ostriches and thugs.

It’s never a Democrat’s fault. As for the 17 states/657 states/500 million unemployed...it’s just the new way of dividing up congressional districts.

"a lot of entertainers/athletes have this tax problem... if you play mlb baseball, you will owe a prorated part of your salary to every state you play in... for entertainers, it is worse as every performance you make becomes a little profit center with income, expenses and taxes."
On the one hand, this makes some sense, but on the other hand, why limit it to entertainers and athletes? I work in a technology field, and my extensive travels have me working, holding meetings and consulting (that is, "performing") in many States. Not to give the revenoooers any bright ideas, but why should a State nick a ballplayer or Franken for doing what they do, and not me?
