From reading background stories in the NYT and WSJ, I conclude that the real problem is with Tiny Tommy's sugar daddy, Hindery, the one how gave him the limo.
Dude spread a bunch of simolions around so he could be a big RAT wheel. Hindery wanted to be Commerce Secretary or at least Trade Rep. Problem is he is too far left, even for the RATs, and probably more importantly, he backed the wrong horse in a number of races (New York mayor race, notably) and pissed the A list RATs off.
So to get back at Hindery, Dash-hole was thrown under the bus. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Below is a comment that appeared below the NYT editorial asking Daschle to step aside. This comment, BTW, received the most “recommendations” from other readers:
“This is just disgraceful. President Obama, as a 19-year old student who campaigned for you, this is a true letdown.
Why should Tom Daschle, who has extensive ties to the health care industry and can’t pay his taxes, be appointed to such an important position? (Not to mention Mr. Geithner, who shouldn’t have been brought in either.)
Why can’t the American people have a government that at least admits its errors and moves in the right direction? Most people would be fined heavily or thrown in jail for the “honest mistakes” these two idiots made.
There has to be other qualified people out there - if not, then we’re already done for.

I am of course relieved for the nation that this sanctimonious swindler will not be using his contacts and connections to destroy our health care system.
On a personal note, though, seeing half of the Gephardt/Daschle socialist corruption tag team on the tube again was even more frightening. Eight years of little Tommy would have been unendurable.
