Well, they WERE originally the Pirates; back in the 1st half of their history when they SUCKED.

No they weren't. They were originally the Philadelphia Eagles.

No, they were the PIRATES, as typically named after the baseball team.

They COMBINED with the Eagles during WWII for a bit. Nicknamed “Steagles”.

It looks to me that both the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Pirates entered the NFL in 1933 as separate teams. During WWII one year, they were the “Steagles.”
Another year Pittsburgh and the Cardinals (I think they were in Chicago at the time) were the “Pitt-Cards.”
