Yearning For Zion Ranch, Texas » Betty Jane Jessop's favorite phrase: "Good grief!"
That's what Betty utters as she reads the new epilogue in her mother's best-selling book, Escape . In those pages, Carolyn Jessop describes her daughter's return to the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, calling her brainwashed.
"It just makes me want to laugh," said Betty, 19, shaking her head.
Besides Carolyn herself, the character in Escape that most intrigues readers is Betty -- the second of Carolyn's eight children with FLDS bishop Merril Jessop.
Why, they ask, did Betty return to the sect after four years in mainstream society? And: Is she OK?
Soon they may be able to read Betty's answer to those questions. Since April, the teenager has been working on a book about her experiences, aided by older sister Maggie Jessop.

“she should put up with sexual subjugation, beatings,”
Not one person has been convicted of any such crime. When CPS kidnapped ADULT WOMEN and held them for two months against their will, waiting and watching while two of these women gave birth - in hopes of snatching the newborns - I call that sexual subjugation and torture. TX authorities molested and abused all of those children for two long months.
You guys know of any significant differences between the
FLDS group and the LDS group, other than the geographical/
spacial polygamy issue?
“Then she should move to Saudi Arabia or Iran.”
Oh, I think she prefers to live in America where the Constitution is supposed to protect her.
“They use the same scriptures.”
That is not true - for one thing.

You win the prize for the most ignorant statement thus far.
Thanks for posting this article.
Hi Saundra. Hope all has been well with you.
I noticed that any news about the continuance of the cases against the FLDS men has kind of dropped off the end of the Earth.
So, I wonder how well her book will sell.
“Not one person has been convicted of any such thing so I dont know where you are getting these charges. It was the TX authorities who molested and abused the FLDS children.”
I would guess that anyone who had even a minimal amount of information on this story; knows that happened. People can read these stories, and with a bit of common sense they know what went on.
And I am not aware that any Texas government employees sexually molested any children from this cult.
As I said before, I detest cults that prey on children. It is a sick behavior that is completely at odds with our nation’s original values.
People can be brainwashed in large groups and do very bad things. Jim Jones proved that.
All three men turned themselves in & are out on bail. I don't think this is a normal lifestyle....Do you really think that being married to 21 women is NORMAL?
“I noticed that any news about the continuance of the cases against the FLDS men has kind of dropped off the end of the Earth.”
Not one conviction. But the authorities are still trying to destroy the FLDS and steal their land. My husband said right from the get-go it was really all about the land.

Considering that I asked you what other significant issue
or belief would separate the FLDS from the LDS in an earlier
post on this very thread, I’ve already admitted to not
being an expert on mormon polygamy - either on Earth, as
practiced by the FLDS, or “in eternity”, as practiced (or
at least claimed to be practiced) by LDS. Either Mormon
group believes in some kind of polygamy.
Beyond that, what separates the two groups when it comes
to their beliefs, Sandra?
And as long as you are talkative, why do you defend the
polygamists who prey on young girls on these threads?

Has it gone to trial yet? I have not seen one word about a trial taken place yet. If so please post the info. Thanks.
There are grown men roaming all over the U.S. banging hundreds of young women, getting them pregnant, paying for abortions and getting away with murder. Society turns a blind eye.
No, I don't think it's NORMAL! But the hypocrisy here is really getting to me.
I read her mother’s book and I don’t get Betty. Why on earth she would want to share a husband and live in that strange lifestyle. I don’t think her mother made up all that stuff. It’s a excellent book.
That is not true - for one thing.
So what scriptures does each sect use? Do they not at least have the Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants (up to the year 1890), and the Bible in common?

So your argument is that since there are “grown men roaming all over the U.S. banging hundreds of young women, getting them pregnant, paying for abortions”, then forcing young women into cultic, polygamous marriages is OK? It is a moral equivalence? Is this really your argument?
You know my biggest problem with the FLDS was the minor sex & babies. And in many of these sects & I am not saying the YFZ ranch either we the taxpayers are paying for these men to have these large families & multi wives. I also wonder how a man can be a father to 36 children & get to know each child as well as he should. Can he give each child the parenting they deserve & need? I brought up 6 children & was always trying to give each of them the time he or she needed. It wasn’t easy or fair at times & I truly wonder how these men do it. I don’t believe they can.

The FLDS broke with the LDS over a hundred years ago. I think the only thing we have in common is the Book of Mormon.
Oh, and don’t forget the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and BYU, not to mention sending Missionaries all over the world.

“I dont think her mother made up all that stuff. Its a excellent book.”
Her perspective. Her daughter sees it from HER perspective. We are all different. It’s a free country. People write books for all sorts of reasons.
“You know my biggest problem with the FLDS was the minor sex & babies.”
Isn’t it funny that the authorities have not proven any such thing and yet folks all over the world apparently believe FLDS old geezers are banging a bunch of little girls night and day.
