“Now, that’s a real and viable option and that is exactly where it should have been handled, in the first place, for this guy — and *not* the utility company (as others are trying to say...).”

Now, this is the fourth time this story has been posted on FR. I have been all over the other threads saying the utility company should be blamed. Why? Because it is a GOVERNMENT run company, this city has their own power service and they do a shitty job. The city is run by liberal Democrats, there is always something in the news about some argument at a council meeting, or one of the police officers suing the city over sexual harrassment from a superior officer (the two officers involved were women, one a lesbian) and all kinds of other things. Now this. It seems to me that Bay City is not the best run city that there is, but these fools think they can run a power company too.

Obviously there is a connection here with the incompetence of the city government and this man dying.

There is also other thing to be considered - here we are on the verge of the biggest government takeover of the private sector that we’ve ever seen. This story is a small example of what will be going on when the Feds run everything for us. Fedzilla holds America hostage.

But you would think he would have relatives come over and notice? In any case, very sad story.

As I understand it, Mr Shur was a widower for 30 years, and childless. What relatives ?

Yeah, make the utility company a social service agency, while you’re at it...

The bottom line is that the company is supposed to follow the procedures and rules. People are supposed to pay their bills and if the public doesn’t like how the rules are, they have input to put through changes in the laws and/or rules and regulations.
***********************************************************

It would be nothing new.

Utility companies have lists of people whose power/gas is not supposed to be disconnected. People on respirators, ventilators, other medical equipment, etc.

I’m also surprised they were allowed to shut off his power in the dead of winter.

It sounds like he was getting ready to make the payment, maybe he was waiting for the weather to clear because he needed a stamp.

Again, did he even know the limiter had been installed? They apparently just left a note taped to the door. Did he even normally use the front door.

My mother comes out to get the mail thru the garage and can’t even see the front door from there. A few years ago her sister sent her some flowers for her birthday. Either my mother didn’t hear the door bell, or they didn’t ring it. But they just left them at the front door. My mother didn’t find the flowers for a week.

That’s my retirement plan - chuck a brick through a bank window. Collapse on the curb, wheezing and coughing. When the cops show up, I will tell them I intended to rob it, can I have my free health care now?

By the time you’re 93 or 94, most all of your contemporaries are deceased; and when you have most likely not been able to have children (who might or might not have been available if they had existed or survived anyway because 74 year old kids have about all they can do dealing with their own survival), spouse deceased, neighbors generally keeping to themselves and sadly this is what we have today in many places. The love of many has grown cold, indeed. - The power company certainly needs to tag the accounts of disabled people and people in their 80’s and 90’s with a humanitarian notice. It looks like the man may have not been able to take care of his business or survival needs any more. Sad to say, but the governing authorities DO have a job to do - and sometimes the family of elderly are the LAST people they will listen to about either getting into assisted living or moving in with family. - We all need to be better neighbors, but sometimes neighbors aren’t all that receptive to anyone getting involved in their business; but we have to keep on trying to do good works anyway.

It is for this reason, that Mrs. infowarrior has been spending most of her time in her native land (Peru) than here with me. Her father, Don Jorge, is of an age with this unfortunate man, and in similar circumstances. We both feel it right that she does so, and I defy any beaureaucrat to dictate to me otherwise...

If someone reported to the authorities that a dog was chained up outside in the snow on this poor vets property, the Animal Cops would have been there in a flash!
