And, if Caroline is actually upset about having to lie, it just shows you how she really isn’t qualified to be a politician......

Exactly. The fact is that the excuse "personal reasons" is a time-honored tradition to save face or help someone save face. The Kennedys should be happy that they were given the call so as to be able to use the "personal reasons" excuse. The problem was that Caroline "dropped out" then, ala Perot, jumped back in and then "dropped out" a second time, and still would have been able to save face but for this phony outrage campaign.
Patterson, for good or bad, has been a politician for a while and while he may have entertained the thought of appointing Caroline, once he met her and then saw the utter disaster of her upstate tour and media interaction, came to a rational conclusion: "No Thanks!"
Patterson gave the Kennedy crew a graceful out but still thinking themselves as royalty they decided to fight a PR war and have only managed to sully themselves all that much more.
We'll see if Caroline treks out to MA to establish residency but, again, I think she and her family have, thankfully, made her damaged goods.
