The rumor is that Caroline was involved with Arthur "Pinch" Sulzberger, publisher of the New York Times, or if not with him, then with someone else, and she didn't want the relationship to be made public. But it may be tax and nanny issues. Or just that she sensed her "campaign" wasn't going anywhere. More here.

The affair and "sham marriage" theories are interesting. It would be poetic justice if Caroline had "Daddy issues" -- I mean, after the Kennedy's saddled the whole country with this mammoth JFK dead father image, it would only be fitting that Caroline shared the burden.
