I wathced it. Roberts flubbed it. Obama paused. Roberts corrected himself.

It sounded like he inverted a couple of words the first time and corrected them the second time. You know that Obama had it memorized, so he realized the error, and didn't repeat it.

By the way, correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't presidents usually sworn in just after midnight and this was really just for show?

I think there was an error with Biden’s swearing in too. It sounded like a line was missing perhaps. But then how old is Stevens, 90 something?

I would have thought these folks would “rehearse.” I have wondered does the CJ ever confer with the president on how the oath will be read? Sometimes they say “I (name) do solemnly swear” while other times it is just the “I,” followed by their name, before the rest of the oath continues. So this has caused confusion before.

In any case after watching these ceremonies for decades I knew it sounded wrong from the get go. “Execute the office faithfully?” Roberts should have read it more carefully, unless he was just jittery as it was the first time for him too.
