This has got to be illegal. How can any governmental unit extort more in taxes than what the elected branches (most notably the Legislative Branch) authorized it to collect?

Does this not clearly constitute a breach of the social contract, and grounds for rebellion of some kind?

Yes. As Roy Orbison sang, “You’re Working For The Man”.

Really now... When has this ever been a concern of government at any level?

Expect more of this. California is just the first symptom in this federal disease.

Well, more and more it seems we have become:

1. Subjects of the Federal Government

2. The property of the State of California.

I swear that’s what our ruling class believes. We have to disabuse them of the notion.

Clearly we didn't give these clowns enough to spend on us.

>>Does this not clearly constitute a breach of the social contract, and grounds for rebellion of some kind?<<

Governments, at all levels, have broken contracts since the early days of the republic. Witness the Indian treaties all broken, the Kelo case, anti-gun laws in DC, confiscations in New Orleans, all of FDR’s lifetime, etc.

I keep refering to the tipping point. There is a point, which we will reach, when bloody revolt will ensue. Keep in mind, that 233 years after a brave band of patriots risked all to fight the mightiest nation on Earth, WE ARE RIGHT BACK WHERE WE STARTED.

Agreed. If this isn’t cause for taxpayer revolt, nothing is, and we may as well all go get fitted for our leg irons.

Be careful. You're thinking rationally. Others may follow you and actually DO something.
