Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) likely will introduce his controversial legislation to reinstate the draft again this year, but he will wait until after the economic stimulus package is passed.
Asked if he plans to introduce the legislation again in 2009, Rangel last week said, Probably yes. I dont want to do anything this early to distract from the issue of the economic stimulus.
Rangels military draft bill did create a distraction for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) soon after Democrats won control of Congress after the 2006 election.
In the wake of that historic victory, Pelosi said publicly that she did not support the draft and that the Democratic leadership would not back Rangels legislation. She also said Rangels legislation was not about reinstating the draft but was instead a way to make a point about social inequality.
Reintroducing the military draft bill, which would attract media attention, will be trickier for Rangel in 2009 than it was a couple years ago because the Ways and Means Committee chairman is now under investigation by the House ethics committee.

Can anyone think of a better way for Obama to create his 4 million new jobs?
>>How do you like our new direction so far?<<
He’s not even in the White House yet. Weeez in fur sum truble.
The only thing Rangel should be able to introduce is himself to his cell mate.
“Any draft is a stupid idea. If the people wont volunteer to fight, then the war isnt worth fighting.”
...you might be typing in Japanese or German tonight had my father’s generation felt that way....in WWII there were 7 draft registrations including one for men 45-64 years of age.
So you agree with this?
Not only that. This time around women will have to be eligible. If not , you can be sure there will be a lawsuit brought. They are serving now in combat areas. There is no reason to exempt women anymore.
“So you agree with this?”
....yes I do....it’s better for the country, and the Army for all classes of society share in the sacrifice....and make no mistake, what’s coming will be known as The Long War.
“There is no reason to exempt women anymore.”
......I undertand your position from a fairness standpoint, but I really hate what’s happened with women getting killed and maimed in the service....it’s a shameful reflection on American manhood.
how dare he force our fat, lazy, uninspired kids into a great career with a lucrative bonus?
Wow, you sure you’re on the right Site? Are you going to serve or are you one of those keyboard generals who has no problem as long as it’s someone else’s ass on the line. I would never serve under this charlatan in chief or ask anyone else to do so.
...Son I’ve already served.....and saw first hand how unfairly things were in 1967-70 when the so called “best and brightest” were allowed to dodge the draft with student deferrments.....think: Bill Clinton
I agree. I think it should be back to the old system of WACS and WAVES. But this is what 30 years of the "womens" movement has come to. They should have minded the phrase " Be careful what you wish for ".
A draft? The dissolution of don’t ask, don’t tell?
You can’t make this stuff up.
It will probably pass right before he undos don’t ask don’t tell.

.....well said!
Hey Charlie, how about these conscripts do their boot camp on your Carribbean town home :)
Yeah....that’s the ticket.
Yes, but it will sure serve to take the attention off his legal (illegal?) problems. He thinks just like Bubba—remember bombing an aspirin factory, and Kosovo taking our eyes off Monica?
...this has been a great discussion but I’ve got to go to bed now...don’t be too quick to diss Rangel on this issue...most times he’s wrong, but on this one he’s got a good point....and you younger guys....if there’s a draft you’ll be proud to serve your country...hell, I would do it all over again if I could.
I have too, voluntarily. Yes, that was a shitty time but remember who was in charge. If you don’t think that would be the case again then you are terribly naive, with all due respect.
