I don’t see any real problem with polygamy (putting aside my natural male fantasies that is). Right now there are only 2 real objections to polygamy, religion and the fear of abuse. In a country where we are supposed to have freedom of religion, you can’t really forbid polygamy on the basis that marriage is between 1 man and 1 women. While, as with my views on gay marriage, I don’t think any of these unions should be called marriage, I believe that they should have all the rights, privileges and responsibilities as a marriage. As far the the abuse concern goes, while that still may be of some concern, it is certainly much less then it would have been in the past and certainly no more likely to happen then in a conventional marriage. I don’t believe I would ever take advantage of any such freedom, however I do think that the ban on polygamy is an ancient religion hold over that has no place in secular law.
Personally I like the idea. I mean sure why should anyone prevent a poly relationship if the parties to it are mature and capable enough of maintaining it?

America could so do. America did so do.
Ask the Mormons.
Polygamy has many reasons for being criminalized. Not the least of which is that in a society where one man has four wives (Islamic lands) three men can not have a wife.
Those unmarried males are surplus males and become cannon fodder, probable sodomites, ad nauseam.
Polygamy and an advanced technological society are not compatible.
