BRENTWOOD, Tenn. -- A man said he was fired from his hotel job for his sexual orientation and claims the owner who let him go dared him to sue.
David Hill is looking for a new job after he said he was fired Tuesday from a former Brentwood Holiday Inn, which now goes by the name Artee Hotel.
"They literally said to me because of my orientation and my alternative lifestyle, that I was not a fit for the hotel," said Hill.
Hill said he used to be the human resources director and is shocked at the owner's decision to dismiss him because of his sexual preference.
"The owner (Tarun Surti) said, 'I don't give a damn. They can sue me. I will not have any of the gays in leadership roles in my hotel.' And that's a quote," said Hill.
While the owner was not available to talk to Channel 4, the assistant general manager, Leonard Stoddard, did comment. He said Hill was fired because "he was gay." He said he was also the one who had to tell Hill that he was being removed from his position.
"The owner, Mr. Surti, comes from a culture that is not very tolerant to the gay lifestyle, and therefore he felt it necessary to have him removed from the workforce at the property," said Stoddard.
"(He was fired) strictly because of his sexual orientation? asked reporter Katina Rankin.
"I do believe that's a very fair assumption," asked Stoddard.
"Did you agree with his decision?" asked Rankin.
"I did not," said Stoddard. "It is in our employee handbook that no one should be discriminated against, harassed verbally, physically or any other means for their sexuality, their sexual orientation, gender, race or anything of that sort."
Hill said he plans on taking legal action and he has already filed a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Department of Labor.
The hotel is privately owned and not part of the Holiday Inn chain. As of Thursday evening, the owner of the hotel had not returned Channel 4's calls.
A blow for justice.
If so, the guy has no case.
These days, you are more likely to get fired for speaking less-than-adoringly of homosexuality.
This is an issue of having the court be used to try and force people to condone homosexual behavior.
I work for a large company and of course like most places we have mens and ladies bathrooms. I of course have always assumed that the sole reason for having different bathrooms for each gender was based upon preventing sexual harrassment and indiscretions. So how is it that an employer can then still maintain this type of protection for it’s employees based upon these anti-sexual orientation laws? Do we have to knock down all the gender based bathrooms and make new single rooms with locks o something?
I would think that an employee could sue any company that would force them into a situaton where they would have to deal with facing other employees who are openly homosexual while using the bathroom. Someone should start to bring lawsuits forth based upon this type of discrimiation that is already being waged against the rights of heterosexual employees.
Many employees at my work even bring there children to work at times. Now we should have to worry about the rights of someone who openly prefers the same gender over worrying about the rights of our children to have a safe enviroment?
The leftwing wants to be able to dictate to society through the courts to have to accept their mandates on what is right and wrong in regards to sexuality under penalty of the law even though the majority of people are against this once they understand the issue.
People have better start fighting back against this agenda of makig special rights for homosexual behavior. Start bringing lawsuits to attack this leftwing position.
The thousands of honest, hard working prostitutes who work at hotels take exception to that assertion.
Now, if you mean 'to get a job working FOR a hotel'....
Sex does not belong in the work place. Straight or gay or whatever.
Okay, I'm confused. Please 'splain.
MM (in TX)
I hate it when that happens. Not that theres anything wrong with it.
Cha-ching.
how did he find out the employee was gay?
If he merely mentioned it, then I back the employee.
If he goes around flirting with the customers, or having sex in the rest room, he deserves to be fired.
As for the dress: Depends if he is good at makeup. If he merely appears to be a woman, so that customers are not aware he is a man, there shouldn’t be a problem. But if he is acting weird or dressing funny again the employer has the right to ask employees of any sort to follow a dress code, and fire those who don’t follow the rules.
So you are making up these rules that all people have to follow? This is ok and that is not?
Why should an employer have to follow your rules of what is right and what is wrong in regards to sexual behavior and appearances?
Hey, he’s in Tennessee? You know, Cracker Barrel is headquartered there. Maybe he could try to get a job with them! LOL
That's because it is insanity!
Since Homosexuality is a chosen lifestyle and since a good portion of American public STILL recognizes it for what it is, a perversion, every employer should have the right to fire someone if their personal choices impact the employer’s business because of this.
Very often, “Openly Gay” goes way over the line of Sexual harrassment. But when you’ve convinced yourself that what you would like to do to a fellow male employee should be taken as a compliment, of course you’re going to claim homophobia. In their mind, it’s a Human Right.
