“Hamas Takes Aim at Ashkelon as Peres Visits”
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “(IsraelNN.com) Hamas targeted Ashkelon with at least three Katyusha rockets mid-morning Wednesday after it took aim on Be’er Sheva, where an empty school was hit. At least two people were hospitalized for light to moderate shrapnel wounds, and several others suffered shock.

President Shimon Peres was visiting a bomb shelter where 30 children are staying at the same time rockets exploded nearby. He also visited rocket victims being treated at Barzilai Hospital. His appearance had been embargoed for security reasons.

The renewed bombardment in Ashkelon accompanied other attacks on Ofakim and Sderot, located southeast of the port city, and areas near Ashdod and Kiryat Gat. One rocket also hit the high-speed Kvish 6 (Highway 6) north-south highway as Hamas tries to widen the areas under attack.

The Israeli Air Force and the Navy resumed fire on terrorist targets shortly after the attack on Ashkelon.”

“Diskin: Hamas hiding in hospitals”
By JPOST.COM STAFF

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The Shin Bet head added that many of Hamas’s senior activists were hiding out in mosques and hospitals in Gaza, some of them in the guise of doctors and male nurses.

“Some of them have turned dozens of mosques into command and control centers on the assumption that Israel won’t attack those places,” he said. “Their development laboratories have been completely destroyed. Their tunnel system has sustained heavy damage. Hamas is trying to utilize [what remains] so that their operatives can escape to Egypt.””

WARDEN MESSAGE: LEBANON EXPECTS SEPTEMBER 12 DEMONSTRATION
U.S. Embassy Beirut released the following Warden Message on December 30:

The conflict in Gaza between Israel and Hamas is causing concern throughout the Middle East region and the across the globe. Over the past weekend, several demonstrations and protests occurred with little or no warning in Lebanon. The bulk of these protests were peaceful, but some injuries were reported at one of the protests.

The U.S. Embassy advises American citizens living and traveling in Lebanon to exercise caution and take appropriate measures to ensure their safety and security. Americans are advised that even the most peaceful assembly can quickly turn violent. Americans should avoid areas where protests and demonstrations are occurring.

The U.S. Embassy continues to restrict the travel of its personnel in Lebanon due to the volatile security situation in the country. Americans in Lebanon are strongly encouraged to maintain a heightened level of awareness and to report any suspicious or unusual activity immediately to Lebanese authorities. U.S. citizens should, as always, maintain a low profile in public.

For the latest security information, Americans should regularly monitor the Department’s web site at http://travel.state.gov/ where the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings, including the Travel Warning for Lebanon, and Travel Alerts can be found. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the U.S. and Canada, or, for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

Americans living or traveling in Lebanon are encouraged to register with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the State Department’s travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov/, so that they can obtain updated information on travel and security within Lebanon. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

The U.S. Embassy is located in Awkar, near Antelias, Lebanon. Public access hours for American citizens are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. American citizens may e-mail BeirutACS@state.gov if they have questions about services provided by the section; they may also call 04 543 600 and ask for the American Citizen Services Section on Mondays or Fridays between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Any American citizen in need of emergency services outside of these hours may contact the Embassy by telephone at any time. The telephone numbers are (961-4) 542-600, 543-600, and fax 544-209. Website: http://lebanon.usembassy.gov. The Arabic language website is: http://arabic.lebanon.usembassy.gov/.
