Explosive device found at Florence Chabad

FLORENCE (JTA) — A rudimentary explosive device was found at the entrance of the Chabad House in Florence.
The device, described as being constructed from a small camping gas canister, was reportedly discovered during the day Saturday but not reported to police until Saturday night after Shabbat.
The Chabad House is located half a block from the city’s main synagogue.
Media reports said a paper fuse apparently had been lit, but had burned out, and no damage occurred.
Florence Chief Rabbi Joseph Levy said the episode was “a very serious gesture that shows how one can pass from irresponsible words to actions such as this.”
Tensions are high in Italy over Israel’s operation in Gaza. Last week, red paint was thrown at the façade of the synagogue in Pisa. On Saturday, thousands of people, many of them Muslim, staged a pro-Palestinian march in Rome. Some of the placards showed swastikas superimposed on the Star of David.
About 300 people staged a counterdemonstration in Rome’s historic Jewish ghetto neighborhood.

Indonesian Imam Calls For Jihad
In reaction to the Gaza violence, one of Indonesia’s well-known imams urged Muslims from the world’s fourth most populous Muslim country yesterday to take up jihad in Gaza.
Abu Bakar Bashir preached to about 500 people at a mosque in Bekasi, east of Jakarta, urging them to join a jihad in the Gaza Strip.
The Indonesian government has tried to discourage calls from more Islamist groups to send civilian fighters, and has offered to dispatch a peacekeeping mission to the Gaza Strip.

In one case, the Air Force spotted a mortar near a refugee camp and targeted it.
IDF officials are closely monitoring developments in the Strip and estimate that the shells were fired by Hamas and other terrorist groups that are attempting to “generate” several terror attacks daily.
Army sources told Ynet that terrorists resorted to mortar fire, rather than a more potent attack, as not to prompt a harsh IDF response, while still maintaining a certain level of terror activity. The IDF said that the mortar attacks constitute a violation of the Gaza ceasefire and that the army will convey an unequivocal message to Hamas that such attacks are unacceptable and would not be disregarded.”

Although the Israeli air force bombed the Phildelphi corridor along the border thousands of times during the course of the Cast Lead campaign, smugglers acknowledge that some tunnels running under the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip have remained in use, and were in operation even during the fighting. Contrary to media reports, the Israeli air force apparently did not use more powerful bunker-busting bombs to destroy the tunnels, rather than regular explosives. Tunnels lined with wood reinforcement have been especially resistant to air force bombing raids.
Smugglers manage to transfer merchandise, drugs and weapons through tunnels dug under the Philadelphi corridor. According to residents of Rafah, the reinforced tunnels were even used during the Israeli military offensive to smuggle in a group of German doctors who wanted to provide medical care to Gaza residents. In addition to Palestinian smugglers, Bedouin from Sinai are also involved in the trade through the tunnels.
One of the Bedouin in the area insists that the smuggling will continue because they have no other way to earn a living. The Egyptian police operating in the area periodically blow up the Palestinian-built tunnels when they become aware of them, but they reportedly turn a blind eye to Bedouin subterranean smuggling routes.

The public policy agendas of revolutionary socialist and Islamist organisations in the UK have increasingly converged on the question of Israeli action in Gaza. This convergence has become especially pronounced following the termination of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas on 19 December 2008.
In London, a national protest took place on 3 January 2009 under the heading ‘National Gaza Massacre Demonstration’. It included the slogans ‘Hands off Gaza. Stop the Bombings. Free Palestine’ called by the Palestine Solidarity Organisation; Stop the War Coalition (STWC); British Muslim Initiative; CND and many other organisations. The speakers included Ken Livingstone, former Mayor of London.[1]
This article highlights the involvement of two key controlling revolutionary organisations involved in these London protests through their ‘front’[2] organisations or politicians (the list includes STWC; British Muslim Initiative and Ken Livingstone as a political personality through his advisers), through an examination of the key objectives and political methods of these modern revolutionary socialist and Islamist UK actors. Specifically, attention will be given to analyzing how the organisations manipulate and infiltrate state agencies and mobilise public opinion. By doing so they influence public policy on the questions of terrorist non-state actors in the Middle East, such as Hamas, the Islamic Resistance Movement), which has been declared a terrorist organisation by the European Union and the United States of America, and their positions of opposition to legitimate nation-states like Israel.
Protests such as this one, which mobilise the Islamic and peace constituencies in the UK, put the British Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary under pressure regarding their policy towards Gaza. The primary aim is to shift UK policy away from supporting Israel’s sovereign right to defend itself against Hamas attacks, whilst a secondary aim is to legitimise Hamas. Furthermore, these constituencies seek to rally the forces opposed to the two-state solution and build an anti-Zionist (i.e., not recognising the right of the state of Israel to exist) position amongst Islamic, peace and left wing groups in the UK. A distinction should be made between these acts and the legitimate democratic right of any member of the UK’s general public to protest, criticise and oppose state policy.
