Swedish "Youths" Riot ( City of Malmo )
Powerline ^ | Dec 19,2008

Those European "youths" are at it again, this time in Sweden. That's how the BBC identifies them: "Swedish city hit by youth riots."

The city is Malmo, in southern Sweden, where vehicles and barricades are burning for a second consecutive night:

In the caption to this photo, Reuters helpfully explains that the fire is being extinguished by policemen because "the fire department considered the area to be too risky to enter with their personnel:"

As usual when European "youths" riot--outside of Greece, anyway--the explanation comes if you keep reading:

"We've had a very difficult evening," a police spokeswoman told the AFP news agency late on Thursday.

"There have been fires burning since this afternoon... extensive damage to public property, and... stone-throwing and bomb threats against police."

She said the trouble was linked to the closure of an Islamic centre. The owner of the building, in an immigrant neighbourhood, had decided not to renew the centre's lease. The centre, which included a mosque, had to move out.

All of this strikes me as newsworthy, but as best I can determine, the New York Times, for one, has yet to mention the Malmo riots.

They’ll probably wind up mollifying them by building a huge new mosque with 4-6 missiles attached.

Is it really so hard to deport people? H***, just pass the right laws, and most of them will go of their own free will.

Flaming youth   [Mark Steyn]

John Hinderaker notes the return of youths of no other discernible characteristics in this BBC headline:

Swedish City Hit By Youth Riots

Let's take a wild guess here. Would the "Swedish city" happen to be "Malmo"? Why, amazingly, yes:

Dozens of youths have rioted in the southern Swedish city of Malmo for a second consecutive night, setting cars on fire and clashing with police.

While we're on a roll, would it happen to be the part of Malmo known as "Rosengard"? Why, right again!

People stand near a burning barricades on the main road in the immigrant-dominated suburb of Rosengard...

"Immigrant-dominated", eh? Is that a way of saying it's the most heavily Muslim neighborhood of Sweden's most Muslim city? Ah, well, let's not go that far. All the BBC is prepared to say is that the otherwise non-specific youths' riotous activities were "linked to the closure of an Islamic centre".

Down under, I got into a little spat with a rather dour lady leftie on Australian radio who disputed my characterization of Malmo, and in particular my claim that ambulances would no longer respond to emergency calls in certain youthful neighborhoods without a police escort. I offered to buy her lunch in Rosengard and show her the town so she could judge for herself, but she declined to take me up on the offer. Still, perhaps she'll reflect on this detail in a Reuters photo caption:

Police extinguish burning barricades on the main road in the immigrant-dominated suburb of Rosengard in Malmo in southern Sweden, early December 19, 2008. The fire department considered the area to be too risky to enter with their personnel.

In my "free speech" crusade up in Canada, I'm frequently lectured by lazy cliche-recyclers that there's no freedom to shout "Fire!" in a crowded theatre. But in a burning city feel free to shout "Nothing to see here!" for another decade or three.

Note: If you are older and you get a compliment from someone saying you look youthful, remember that it REALLY means you look like a Muslim street thug. I’m just sayin’.

It’s the euro pronounciation of “youth.” Back during the major rioting in certain suburban arrondisments of Paris, news commentators went on and on about “yutes,” completely avoiding the obvious, as far as who they were.

Why most governments don’t use this obvious solution is beyond me. If they only used it once, there would be few if any riots for several years.

This type of problem will stop once the mass conversions to Islam occur.

Not exactly. It was Joe Peschi's pronunciation of "youth" ( as a New Yawk lawyer in the south) in the movie My Cousin Vinnie

Lemme guess. We're not going to find a "Sven" or "Sigrid" among these "Swedish" youths, are we?
