McCain scolds GOP for whacking Obama
Politico ^ | 2008-12-14 | Mike Allen

In a surprising rebuke to the warriors who fought for him through tough times, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Sunday sided with President-elect Barack Obama and scolded the Republican National Committee for fanning the Illinois corruption scandal.

On ABC’s “This Week,” host George Stephanopoulos asked: “The chairman of the Republican National Committee, Mike Duncan, has been highly critical of the way President- elect Obama has dealt with this.

"He's had a statement every single day, saying that the Obama team should reveal all contacts they've had with Governor [Rod] Blagojevich. He says that Obama's promise of transparency to the American people is now being tested. Do you agree with that?”

McCain replied: “I think that the Obama campaign should and will give all information necessary. You know, in all due respect to the Republican National Committee and anybody — right now, I think we should try to be working constructively together, not only on an issue such as this, but on the economy stimulus package, reforms that are necessary. And so, I don't know all the details of the relationship between President-elect Obama's campaign or his people and the governor of Illinois, but I have some confidence that all the information will come out. It always does, it seems to me.”

When it became clear that McCain would be the Republican nominee, I thought for months he’d do more damage with a Dem. Congress than a Dem. president would. Then, after the Dem. convention, I decided maybe we’d be a little better off with McCain in the WH.

I think my first instincts were correct. McCain would have done more damage in the long run (including a further weakening of the conservative cause). Republicans need to forget this contemptible character and focus on the 2010 congressional elections.

And the GOP scolds McCain by not electing him! What has happened to this once-great man? I really don’t understand

His current actions do not diminish the courage, faith, self-sacrifice and strength it took to see him through the Hanoi Hilton. Sadly, time and age have taken a toll on his health, and I believe his mental capacity. In my opinion, its time for this gentleman to fade away and enjoy the rest of his life with his family and friends far away from Washington DC.

Reading his statement I came up with something different. He told the Repubs to focus on solutions first and politics second. There is nothing to suggest right now that Obama is on on anything illegal. He’s also said that the facts will come out as they always do.

The Repubs should be focusing on issues of tax policy, screaming about bail outs and why we can’t just spend our way out of this. Let the corruption issues work themselves out but certainly under a watchful eye. If they lose sight of the damage that current federal government actions will have on us then the bill will be huge.

It’s called Stockholm Syndrome and he will suffer from it until he dies. He should not have been the Republican candidate. Period.

Can anyone explain why we ran a “Republican” for the White House who hates Republicans?

Because it was his turn. Same reason we ran Bush I, the same reason we ran Dole, and to some lesser extent the reason we ran "W."

We haven't had the genuine article on the ticket since Reagan. Now THAT was a maverick choice.

Sometimes, it seems as though senility creeps into his mindset. Something just doesn’t set quite right.

During the debates, I thought, McCain was intimidated by Obama and even to the point of being afraid of him.

Obama has about as many ties to radical and terrorist as bin Laden does, and McCain was afraid to go there. Obama’s connections were well documented and McCain just wouldn’t go there. McCain was docile.

I think many of us voted for Sarah Palin, not McCain and we should not castigate ourselves over that. After all, it catapulted a fine leader of a woman beyond everyone’s wildest dreams and that’s the good part.

She has staying power which is proven by everytime she surfaces there is a flurry of Palin bashing and of course we, her loyal fans pop up once again to the surface much to the chagrin of the deranged party.

Once great? He has done exactly one noteworthy thing in his life, surviving the POW camp. Even there he did what he had to do to survive. Many others survived as well who didn't think they were therefore entitled to become president as a result. His Senate record would be embarrassing to anyone with any integrity.

This is the real McCain: confused but pig-headed, thinks it some kind of virtue to trash his own side. One wonders what he really said and did in hanoi, what has he been re-enacting all these years

“Since you lost the primaries in 2000, you have stabbed conservatives and Pres Bush in the back every chance you got.”

When you factor in Bush’s record, you must always keep John McCain’s role in mind. I can’t forget that when our Senate numbers were very fragile, McCain allowed the media to dangle the possibility that he might switch to the Democrats. Trent Lott, Pres. Bush and everyone else had to kiss his rear to placate him and what did they get from in return? You owe me for 2000.
