The trades work 40 hours during the week and then work mountains of O/T on the weekends and holidays doing PM and fixing repairs that were cobbled to keep the line running.

And that's a bad thing???

I’m not suggesting that it’s a bad thing....except for the O/T.

The majority of union grievances originate within the trades. Management/engineering step in to do a job that they don’t want to have the bargaining unit perform.

Because it would involve too many of the trades guys, and take too much time, manufacturing engineering does the work and the grievances start flying. “Salaried employees doing bargaining unit work”. When the job never belonged to the bargaining unit, but they want it to, and are mad that management is keeping this work out of their hands.

This is why many places have canned the trades and contract that work to non-union outside firms.
