Who will fill Obama's senate seat? (So Obama says never met with Blagojevich)

CHICAGO, ILL. -- Now that Barack Obama will be moving to the White House, his seat in the U.S. Senate representing Illinois will have to be filled.

That's one of Obama's first priorities today.

He's meeting with Governor Rod Blagojevich this afternoon in Chicago to discuss it.

Illinois law states that the governor chooses that replacement.

There's already been speculation about his selection...from Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. of Chicago's south side who co-chaired Obama's presidential campaign, to recently-retired state senate president Emil Jones, to the governor himself.

It's likely the governor will make his decision quickly so the new senator will get some seniority before newly-elected senators take office in January.

Part of the timing depends on when Obama officially vacates his senate seat.

KHQA's Alexis Hunt is speaking with Illinois Senator John Sullivan today about his thoughts on that replacement process, his time working with Obama in the state senate, and if there's a chance Sullivan might play a role in the Obama administration. Watch KHQA News at 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. tonight to hear what he has to say.

What are the odds Blago will name a Conservative Republican in a “spite” pick?

If Reid and the Illinois State Legislators have any say he will either be stripped of any appointments or, if that fails, anyone he sends will be soundly rejected by the Senate.

The third link -- the 11/7 story from the Sun-Times, is the one quoted in the transcript of charges against Blago.

On November 6, 2008, ROD BLAGOJEVICH talked with Spokesman. ROD BLAGOJEVICH told Spokesman to leak to a particular columnist for the Chicago Sun- Times, that Senate Candidate 2 is in the running for the vacant Senate seat. According to ROD BLAGOJEVICH, by doing this, he wanted “to send a message to the [President-elect’s] people,” but did not want it known that the message was from ROD BLAGOJEVICH.
>>>snip<<<
A review of this particular Sun Times column on November 7, 2008, indicates references to the specific language and arguments regarding Senate Candidate 2 as a potential candidate for the Senate seat, as discussed by ROD BLAGOJEVICH and Spokesman.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is "Candidate 2."

They must’ve misspoke, just like Axelrod misspoke, just like Blagojevich misspoke. Lot of misspeaking going on up there.

Who will fill Obama's senate seat?

That's a tough one.

Those are awful small shoes to fill.

Read Byron York’s article at NRO. Pretty interesting, especially the following comments:

http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=NzhiYmFlMDZiNzkxYmZlMThmMTZjNDJlYzYwM2ZhNjY=

“After several pages of detailing those machinations, the criminal complaint takes an abrupt turn, describing no wiretaps for a period of three weeks. The complaint says Blagojevich had “numerous conversations” about the Senate seat during that period, but it doesn’t detail any. Then, it skips forward to a conversation that took place on December 4.”

Hmmmm . . . wonder what’s on those 3 weeks of wiretaps that haven’t been published yet?

My sense is they did have the meeting. Hopefully it was wiretapped. It probably went something like this: Sun God said I would like you to appoint her..Blago said, well, I have not made up my mind so what might get me to select her...Sun God, well, you would have my appreciation...Sun God, let me sleep on that for awhile. Afterwards, he began conjuring up what he should get for appreciation and began contacting the Sun God’s buffer who laid out what he could get but they needed to keep the Sun God’s fingerprints off it. Frankly, that sounds eerily like Emanuel’s words. Since there is no quid pro quo directly between the Sun God and Blago, game, set, match no indictment...buffer defense works again. Who might be holding this bag of excrement: Emanuel. Comment for the press: That is not the Emanuel I knew”.

Had the same idea but linking to the article produces no results. It’s taking quite awhile to load and I’ve all but given up trying. Glad you sent it to Drudge. Hopefully you included foxnews in the mix.

In an interview published in the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday, Obama reiterated that point, saying: "I have not discussed the Senate seat with the governor at any time."

This is from your link. Interesting, ain't it?

I captured it. Didn't mean to sound like a snark. Just trying to pass on a good tool.

If he just hadn’t said that he “never” spoke to Blagojevich, he would have been better off.

Methinks thou dost protest too much...
